Hi, i'm new. I am wanting to start a martial art style. the problem is: Choosing one.

i want an art that involves varied, fast moving punching and kicking (i was considering taking taekwondo but realised it was mainly kicking and i prefer to throw punches aswell ) and obviously good, usefull techniques.

i am 14 . I am around 6ft tall and i am of medium build. I have never taken martial arts before, please reply.

Thanx for your help

Take Shotokan.

I am basing this suggestion soley on the fact that it is the only martial art I have ever taken, and therefore the only one I can speak about with any degree of knowledge. :)

Seriously though, Shotokan is good for equal distribution between punching and kicking.

Then again, I think most, if not all, martial arts involve fast moving punches and kicks.

Good luck!

It woukld help tremendously if we knew where you were located, and what was available in your area. For example, if you lived in New York City or LA, then there is just about everything. But if you lived in Two Dot, Montana (yes, there really is a Two Dot)...then your choices are limited.

That should get you started. I didn't personally check out any of the sites and I can't vouch for any of them, but maybe some of our other UK friends can add something.

Personally, I'd recommend any traditional Okinawan system over a Japanese or Korean one...but that's personal preference of course. You need to figure out what it is that you want out of a martial art. Sport/competition? Self-defense? Grappling? Fast promotions (aka McDojo/belt factory). Effective or flashy techniques (usually can't have both)?
