Albert_Wesker Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Hi, i'm new. I am wanting to start a martial art style. the problem is: Choosing one. i want an art that involves varied, fast moving punching and kicking (i was considering taking taekwondo but realised it was mainly kicking and i prefer to throw punches aswell ) and obviously good, usefull techniques. i am 14 . I am around 6ft tall and i am of medium build. I have never taken martial arts before, please reply. Thanx for your help Kirt
WapCaplet Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Take Shotokan. I am basing this suggestion soley on the fact that it is the only martial art I have ever taken, and therefore the only one I can speak about with any degree of knowledge. Seriously though, Shotokan is good for equal distribution between punching and kicking. Then again, I think most, if not all, martial arts involve fast moving punches and kicks. Good luck! Albert_Wesker Posted September 10, 2004 Author Posted September 10, 2004 thanx, im open to any more suggestions from other members but will definately look up shotokan, is it effective in real fights? (not that i am planning any lol)
Shorinryu Sensei Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 It woukld help tremendously if we knew where you were located, and what was available in your area. For example, if you lived in New York City or LA, then there is just about everything. But if you lived in Two Dot, Montana (yes, there really is a Two Dot)...then your choices are limited. Albert_Wesker Posted September 10, 2004 Author Posted September 10, 2004 wow, i didnt know there were so much available in my area!!!!! guess i can keep my options quite wide, yay! lol but im still not sure what to take.....hmmm
Shorinryu Sensei Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Personally, I'd recommend any traditional Okinawan system over a Japanese or Korean one...but that's personal preference of course. You need to figure out what it is that you want out of a martial art. Sport/competition? Self-defense? Grappling? Fast promotions (aka McDojo/belt factory). Effective or flashy techniques (usually can't have both)? My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
