Master Jules Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 Then tell him (if he doesnt know already....) dont leave.....stay with Kayo for life if you can. ~Master Jules......aka "The Sandman""I may be a trained killer......but Im really a nice guy"
47MartialMan Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 I do that because it tells me right off the bat that there is something....different. A chinese style will not have a japanese name. On the same token, a japanese style won't have a chinese name. When the two are mixed, it's generally a style someone made up and named on their own. For example, shaolin-do. And we know the reputation those guys have... 1.) What about Tang So Do? 2.) Shorin ryu? 3.) Jeet Kune Do? shaolin-do Tell me about them....
Drunken Monkey Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 not sure about tang so do but there's nothing 'wrong' with the names of the other two. unlike shaolin-do, which is wrong on more than one count. anyway. there's a wonderful thing called google. that way you can read about them and make up your own mind. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
Master Jules Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 BTW.....Goju Ryu is an OKINAWAN system.....NOT Japanese......the Okinawan culture and people are founded by 36 families that came from CHINA....NOT Japan. The port city of Naha, Okinawa did all of its commerce with Southern China.....NOT Japan.....and that is where Goju comes from. 47MartialMan Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 I am talking about the suffix "do" attached to arts. Is "do" Japanese? MJ, the Japanese "stole" Karate. Okinawa's location made it a "exchange center" for China and Japan. They were rivals. To keep from "loosing face", the Japanese, as they had attempted in WWII, try to de-culturize Okinawa while taking its resources.
Master Jules Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 Yes, the suffix "do" is Japanese...translating to "way", as in kara-te do...the way of the emtpy hand...originally "China hand". Regarding the second part of your post MM....you are correct in saying that the Japanese stole karate......but it goes way further back than modern times....The Satsuma Clan invaded Okinawa in the mid 1600's and has essentially left Okinawa under Japanese control ever since. ~Master Jules......aka "The Sandman""I may be a trained killer......but Im really a nice guy"

Master Jules Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 I am not a Korean stylist....."do" may have meaning in Korean that I am not aware of. In Chinese it is "dao", or "tao" ~Master Jules......aka "The Sandman""I may be a trained killer......but Im really a nice guy"

Do, I believe is an acceptable word in korean, not sure. but considering there are several korean styles that use do... I'll check on it. shorin is japanese. the root word is shaolin, but notice it's not called sil lum ryu or shaolin ryu. JKD is an example - it's a created "style" that 's not even really a style.

Nothing wrong with my history - chi is not an okinawan word. the same thing applies. chi-i-do is not a full Japanese nor a full chinese, nor a full okinawan name.
