Our dojo has started trying to transition to using English phrases only, or at least using the English phrase as well as the Japanese. I can appreciate the traditional aspect of continuing to speak in the original Japanese, but I also think there is something to be said for simply speaking the most understandable way.

 

I don't think the original founders of karate used Japanese words because it was traditional. They used Japanese words because they spoke Japanese. They counted to 10 in Japanese because Japanese was the language they spoke and they needed to count to ten.

 

We speak English. Doesn't it make more sense to use the language we understand, just like the founders of karate used the language they understood? Why not count to 10 in English? I sometimes wonder if Japanese people shake their heads and wonder "Why don't they just count in a language they understand? It's just counting..."

 

Anyway, I digress...
