47MartialMan Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 I thought Bruce had more than one instructor? Did he not workout and "learn" from multiple of people/systems? Perhaps, "needing no instructor in JKD" means to learn from as many systems (that have instructors) As far as not needing a instructor, somewhere, somehow, something has to be taught/learned. Even fundamentals. Take the development of the Bai He system. In some tales, it was developed by a female. She had formal martial training. Or the developer of Tohng Lohng, he too, was a fighter before its development. Of course such tales are shrouded and remain challenged through time. But the point, is that somewhere, something has to be learned from another somehow. Rather that something learned needed improvement or has improved is another consideration.

47MartialMan Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 Its funny people are ready to bash Bruce Lee and JKD since he his gone. The same goes with other art founders I guess.
Rick Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 Well, i definately wouldn't have poked fun at him to his face, cos i would have got a little "" WWWWAAAATAAAHHH!!"" in the face! But i love Bruce, so i wouldn't have a go at him now anyway. GhostlySykanRyu Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 I'm only trying to say that a sensei looking over you is not always necessary. The trainer does not mold the student, no matter how he would like to, the student forms himself. I myself am about to enter the dojo now, just to see if theres anything worth absorbing and relating there. Being in this dojo will never make me a Jiujitsui man, entering another will never make me a kareteka or a Judo man. As much as I am interested in the styles, I will never be a Wing Chun or Gung Fu man. I will always be simply myself in my own way. Now for the original topic, I'll reword things and see if that helps. There are Jeet Kune Do dojos, but in a sense they are not. While I do not entirely doubt their validity, there is only one trainer who received consent from Lee. Still, I'm not against them, it's how many are run. As I said, the name of Jeet Kune Do is often used for effect without the meaning ever being realized by the so called instructors. The clone arguement: a bit lopsided. There is a very limited amount of JKD literature, unless you mean it in the thrue sense of what Jeet Kune Do is. In that case, the first clone would have every book written...ever, as Jeet Kune Do requires a constant state of learning and reflection. And if it simply a clone with very little knowledge prior to this, and it's only goal is to fight, then it will have a fair chance, for the first clone will become enveloped in his task endefinitely. Then again, I'm not all for the hypothetical anyway, I prefer to accept or change what is. To condemn the art of another is to condemn your own as well. We all have the same origin.
Rick Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 Yeah i agree that a sensei is not always necessary like me at the moment - although i am a senpai - i don't have an instructor, i'm just practising what i have previously learned in classes that i have been to. And yeah, we each make our own moulds, a trainer does not make it for us. 47MartialMan Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 Hmnn, I have to think about this......
GhostlySykanRyu Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 As a martial artist should always be reflecting To condemn the art of another is to condemn your own as well. We all have the same origin.
Rick Posted September 16, 2004 Posted September 16, 2004 Heh, good one JKD Oh and 47MM, i'm soon going back to classes so i'm not gonna be training on my own forever. I wouldn't mind obtaining a second black belt in something. I know black belts are hollow things some times, but if i train hard enough and i think i deserve it honestly then it will be cool... Rick Right attitude.......individual training is ok, but other than ranking, to have someone else there has many other benefits.
