parkerlineage Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 Is it just me, or are the martial arts portrayed terribly in most films? Granted, I've seen a few that I approved of (yes, my approval matters) , but most of them just seem to be crap. Even the 'greats' sometimes are trash. I've had so many friends, knowing that I'm a martial artist, tell me I absolutely have to see...van Dam...Steven Segal... Beat me with a tonfa if I'm wrong, but can those guys only do about three techniques, and only one of them well? I can do the splits...why does van Dam (that's got to be spelled wrong) get the movie deals, and I don't? aefibird Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 I can do the splits...why does van Dam get the movie deals, and I don't? ...because life is unfair... (can ya tell I'm having a bad day today?? ) lol, seriously, though, it can be annoying to see 'famous martial artists' on screen who couldn't even punch their way out of a paper bag. Y'know the actors I mean - the ones who the non-MA public think are big action heroes, but who have little or no flair for martial arts and no real understanding of the concepts behind them. battousai16 Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 awww, i'm sorry aefibird, i hope your day picks up i dunno, sometimes it's just nice to have a little fun. like music. sometimes you wanna' hear deep, meaningful lyrics with well thought out music that you can truly appreciate. other times you wanna pop in saturday night fever and burn baby, burn! not that i've ever been a segal or a van damme fan. i've always drifted towards jackie chan, myself. sometimes i don't wanna' watch a movie that will change my view of the world and make a deep impact on my life. i wanna' see someone get killed with a billiard ball, damn it! True, but I'm just a little picky. Even when listening to cheesy pop songs I like them to be good cheesy pop songs (if there can be such a thing!) Same with MA movies - the movie might be "Martial Arts Lite", but I still want the actors to look as if they have at least half a clue about what they're doing.awww, i'm sorry aefibird, i hope your day picks up Thank you Battousai, my day did pick up. Maybe it was something to do with the beers I had later... hmmm.... "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." The Beautiful South - The Rose of My CologneSheffield Steelers!

Same with MA movies - the movie might be "Martial Arts Lite", but I still want the actors to look as if they have at least half a clue about what they're doing i suppose. but you know those songs that are just so awful that you can't stop listening to them? or for MA movies, sometimes you want "once upon a time in china".... sometimes you want "road house".... sometimes, the best movie is the worst movie. though i suppose i see your point as to the whole "knowledge of martial arts thing". there's a big poster add in the local Target; it's probably 6 or 7 feet tall. and it features this woman, who i guess is supposed to look strong, in sweats punching. it's the single most pitiful looking punch i've ever seen, and it makes me shake my head every time... ...it's as bad as i am at wing chun and glad to hear your day picked up. always a plus "I hear you can kill 200 men and play a mean six string at the same time..."-Six String Samurai

How many guys can sport that terrible combover quite like him and STILL get a girl. If your enemy refuses to be humbled......you must destroy him.
aefibird Posted September 7, 2004 Posted September 7, 2004 How many guys can sport that terrible combover quite like him and STILL get a girl. ...only the guys that have the same amount of money that he has. It's 'amazing' how a previously unattractive guy can suddenly become Mr Hunky to some girls as soon as they find out he's loaded. "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." Ravencroft Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 I dont think some of the hollywood MAists are so bad. i mean chuck norris knows his stuff...jackie chan and jet li are phenominal at what they do. i mean just because someones an actor does not mean they dont know what theyre doing.
