47MartialMan Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 OK....don't know if this was topic: I believe I have a answer.... Just throwing this out. Could Muay Thai be used to "counter" Grappling (the term to get someone to the ground)?
SevenStar Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 anything can counter anything. the key is to train not getting taken down. for example, by crosstraining with grapplers and learning how to sprawl, you now know the best method to defend a double leg. Now, from the sprawled position, can you knee him? If you circle around him as you sprawl, are you able to follow with strikes, etc.
Rick Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 yeah i agree with SevenStar - it's all about using the specific art to it's best advantage against the weaknesses of the other art. I've seen kickboxers beat grapplers and vice versa, although i've seen more of the vice versa than the aforementioned. Rick Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 In the end versatility is what's it's all about isn't it... Yeah i think so. Rick RJT: 2nd Degree Black Belt Freestyle Kickboxer - 3rd Gup HapKiDoist - 6th Kyu Zen Go Shu KarateKaJust Kick Them, They'll Understand...-TBK
47MartialMan Posted September 15, 2004 Author Posted September 15, 2004 Yeah, but Rick, do not take me wrong, I just didn't know kickboxing had a ranking system. I just thought that in order to kick box, one had to be able to kick and box, provided with a good trainer. And in the past, per US, one had to be a black belt of a martial art. Kind of a forced, somewhat silly, standardization. What is Goju Kai, Zen Do Kai, Zen Go Shu? Do you have any links?
Rick Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 Yeah ur cool man, no worries. Zen Go Shu has no links cos it's not that big... Goju Kai is the Japanese version of the Okinawan Goju Ryu - it's pretty kata based... I guess u could google it. https://www.zendokai.com.au is for zendokai... it's sort of rare outside of Australia cos it was set up by the dude who pioneered ring kickboxing in Oz, Bob Jones. 47MartialMan Posted September 15, 2004 Author Posted September 15, 2004 So which one are you currently studyng?
Rick Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 Heh, currently i am studying Rick-Jutsu man... I'm training myself at the moment because my Zen Go Shu school was having political problems and i didn't like squabbling within the dojo so i left. I'm just practising my old HapKiDo and Kickboxing stuff and keeping myself in shape. Sparring with other MMA mates of mine and generally having a good time with it. I'm qualified to start up my own Martial Arts school if i went back to Freestyle Kickboxing but i still wanna be a little boy instead of teaching. Although i did used to teach juniors. 47MartialMan Posted September 15, 2004 Author Posted September 15, 2004 Yeah, politics, the ruin of many martial art schools.
