For Tang So Do practitioners:

It has been a long while since I had practiced Korean Martial Arts....

So my Korean pronounciation is rusty...

Tang So Do:

Is it pronounced

"Tohng Sul Dough"

With snapphy short empahsis on the forst do and a somewhat "roll" on the last.

Incidently, my FIRST martial art was TKD/Hapkido..same instructor..

Many, many years ago in the late 60's.

In Korea it is pronounced Dang Sue Doh. It is spoken fast enough that it actually sounds like Tung Sue Doh. The translation most often used is "The Way of the Empty (Chinese) Hand".

TANG = refers to China's T'ang dynasty

SOO = Empty Hand

DO = Way or Path

Chinese pronuncation: T'ang Shou Dao

Japanese pronunciation: Too Te Do

The first two lines of my original post are about the pronunciation. There is no "L" sound in the Korean pronunciation of Tang Soo Do. The SOO word is pronounced like the American female name "Sue".

TANG: pronounced as "Dung", slightly elongated, actually sounds like "Tung".

SOO: pronounced as the American female name "Sue", spoken very quickly.

DO: pronounced as DOH, spoken very quickly and almost sounds as part of the word SOO.

from my experience, the pronunciation of TANG is actually more like 'daang'

I think the 'tongue' pronunciation of TANG is more of an Americanization.

A good place to as for more info is the warrior-scholar discussion board http://www.warrior-scholar.com/wforum/ It is a Tang Soo Do specific board, and there are several native and fluent Korean speakers that post there regularly.
