Mu Ryuk
Hey all, Well, I've realized that I need to put in a lot more work with my hands. I try to do focus mitts with my friends between classes and I do heavy bag work, but that's not enough. I'm going to do Shadow Boxing, but I really don't know if there's anything specific to it. Any drills or anything, or just basic guidelines? If anyone can suggest any other kind of drills, focus mitts, heavy bag, speed bag drills, anything and everything is much appreciated. Thanks. iolair
Visualise. Imagine a real opponent in front of you who is attacking and defending your moves - react to what he does. Try to work at high intensity and 2 or 3 minute rounds of shadow boxing with a minute rest between each one. Work in the same way as you would with a real training partner ... e.g. try it just using hand techniques, just using foot techniques, and all out. Currently: Kickboxing and variants.Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.
Rich_2k3
Mu Ryuk, this best way to shadow box is wear weighted gloves. Check out a few fitness shops online, see if u can find any. battousai16
isn't there risk to that? i was under the impression that if you use weight, you should move slower or risk injury. i don't use weights myself, it's just what i've heard. Rich_2k3
Its not dangerous, the weights are very light, usually just a couple of pounds. battousai16
interesting. i'd still feel weird about it. i think i'd pull back all my punches in fear of a tennis elbow sort of thing. 47MartialMan
As long as the shadow doesnt hit back. Seriously From what I recall, shadow boxing is used when there are no mirrors and/or equipment.
markusan
I shadow box, but only when i'm away from home and don't have access to a bag. Shadow boxing is good if you really concentrate on building up speed but make sure your technique is clean. Practice alternating punches high and low, always visualise your exact target, like the nose, stermum, temple etc. Be specific and make sure you change your hand to suit your target. I use it mainly for speed and co-ordination, but I always return to the bag to add a bit of reality. Start at the head and work your way down to the groin target by target, then work back up. next pick on high target then one low working your way to the middle. Then just go crazy and punch till your lungs burn.
47MartialMan
They teach that in TKD? Seriously and sincerely, martial art schools have been adapting other training routines.
Kicks
I hate shadow boxing, I always lose. If you have a partner try this. In a dark room face a wall with your partner behind you. He blinks a flashlight on the wall to one of several targets; lower left, middle left, upper left, above head, upper right, middle right, or lower right. You set a predetermined technique to throw for each location. For example, he flashes to the lower right, so you do a front kick to an imaginary knee. A flash to the upper left could be a left hand block followed by a right cross; upper right could be a roundhouse kick, etc. Increase the frequecy of flashes as you get better reaction times. when you create the world's largest trailer park, you're going to have tornadoes
