CapitalKarate Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 hey all, does anyone here know of an effective, or really effective grappling MA school in the portland/tigard/mcminnville area? thanks! Joshua Brehm-When you're not practicing remember this; someone, somewhere, is practicing, and when you meet them, they will beat you.
ShadowGoomba Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 I think that there is a Straight Blast Gym in portland, i also know of one in beaverton. Don't know yet if they are any good though. 1-up!
Gunyo Kogusoku Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 There is also the Samurai dojo in Portland which teaches Sosuishitsu ryu kumi uchi (jujutsu) and Koshi No Mawari (iaijutsu). It's a classical Japanese style dating back to the 1600's. Do a Google search. You should be able to find it. Regards,-Steve DelaneyThe methods of war become the methods of peace.
Squawman Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 I trained with some of the guys at the Straight Blast gym in Portland. They are good guys and pretty much know what they are talking about. There is also Randy Coture's gym in Rockwood (east Portland) if you want some good ground and pound.

I've done a little reading about them but haven't signed up yet.
Squawman Posted September 7, 2004 Posted September 7, 2004 I just rolled with a guy that taught at Straight Blast. I really didn't take any formal calss. He was a good blue belt. They are very informal at their schools.
Drunken_Apprentice Posted September 7, 2004 Posted September 7, 2004 Yeah, that's what I heard too ... they seem to throw traditionalism out the window if it serves little or no purpose. I've been going back and forth about either joining a straight blast gym or wing chun place for the longest time. Money and travel has sorta limited my ability to actually go to one or the other but at this point I should probably just choose one and see how i like it.
dear john Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 i take jujitsu, but my instructor takes wing chung and he says wing chun mixes with grappling MA's beautifully. the funny thing is that i know im wrong and i know your right, yet you keep argueing like it will change my mind. you should really know, you dont have to be right to win:)
thaiboxerken Posted September 28, 2004 Posted September 28, 2004 NorthWest fighting arts is where I train at. SBG is ok, but they seem to be almost purely grappling and MMA oriented. Where I train at, you get grappling, muaythai, Kali, JKD, silat and you can even train in the "internal" arts (which I don't care for). https://www.northwestfighting.com If you go, let them know I sent ya! Just kick 'em, they'll understand.- Me Apprentice Instructor under Guro Inosanto in Jun Fan Gung Fu and Filipinno Martial arts.Certified Instructor of Frank Cucci's Linxx system of martial arts.

How is a grappling and MMA program different from NW fighting's approach? (From my very limited point of view the two gyms still sound very similar).
