Hi all, I'd like to know if anyone here knows of a school in the Portland/Tigard/Mcminnville area of Oregon that teaches an authentic effective self defense chinese martial art? Any knowledge anyone has will be greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine and her brother are teaching shaolin longfist in oregon - I'll find out if she's in portland or the surrounding area.

y'know, instead of putting up a thread in all of the different categories, you probably could have just put one up in the general one...

and i still hold you should probably stick with shorin ryu. but if that's not available, here's a list of dojos and dojangs and kwoons and gyms and what not; as good a place to start as any.

well you see, regarding the posting in every major section.... i wanted to make sure that if the person who had info about where the schools in oregon are and what types there are only visits certain topics on the MB that he would eventually see this message... also does anyone know what enshin karate is?

that's understandable, but it's considered bad "netiquette" to cross post like that.

o, oops, sorry, i didn't realize that.. i shall refrain from posting this way anymore... quick question... does anyone here know how effective wing chun is? and how long on average does it take to get to a level where you know enough to defend yourself?

There's one in Beaverton - taught by Chow Hung-Yuen (though I've heard him called "Hung Chow"). Web site is:

The other is in NE Portland along Burnside ... I think it's 1007 E. Burnside, or something like that. Same style, taught by a student of Hung Chow.

As for effectiveness, I've heard varying things. Some say it's tremendously effective because it's so simplified and fast. Others say it's incomplete because it doesn't have grappling and that you never see trapping in MMA tourneys. Who knows. I know in the latter place they encourage going to MMA tourneys if only to get exposed to other styles and therefore adapt to techniques you wouldn't otherwise see.

Another place to spot out would be:

... which is in Beaverton, but there's also a place in Portland along MLK (something like 1911 or thereabouts). They teach a philosophy of "aliveness" ... if it doesn't work against a fully resisting opponent who's intent on taking yer head off, it had no place here.

Sound advice, I suppose.

Hope I helped.

Wow, I'm thinking about kung fu as well, and for some strange jest, it happens to be about schools in my area as well. Nice. This helps a lot.

the WC guy in beaverton is kinda cool. I only visited once though(I want to sample more MA first before deciding). He teaches out of his house(sorta like a club), and most of the guys there have trained in MA before. It is only 8 min away from my house but if you live in the portland area it might be a wee bit far away.
