sickwithit13
what happens with your belt rank when you decide to switch schools? Martial Arts USATALIUM - THE SPIRIT OF TAEKWONDOhttps://www.talium4me.com
47MartialMan
Some schools out of courtesy (and eagerness) will allow you retain your rank. Others will want to start you some other rank after reviewing what you know. Investigate each school/instructor. However, rank should not be the issue if there is newer, fresher material to be learned.
Kicks
At the dojang I attend we honor the current rank of a student switching over. However, this hasn't always worked well for the student. There is a chain (franchise) of TKD schools in our area. Many times we get a student switching over from there to us. We have found that their color belts (below black) have knowledge of their forms and basic techniques, but are one or two belts lower than our students in proficiency of them. This is no problem and we are usually able to catch them up in a few months. This can easily be done since the reason they left was a desire to get better anyway. These students often stay around to at least making their black belt. However, when a black belt student from there transfer over and retains his/her belt, they usually don’t stick around too long. Our curriculum is quite extensive and it seems to overwhelm them. We tell them to be patient and in time they will pick up on the belt ran requirements as well as the requirements for the color belts they are responsible for. But every time they quit within a year, no matter how hard we work to keep them encouraged. How do any of you address this situation? when you create the world's largest trailer park, you're going to have tornadoes
47MartialMan
That is because the goal is Black Belt. In analogy, when you graduate from high school, most people don't want to go back
Englon
SOme let you keep your rank and others want you to start over, most likley a money thing. I think the best way is to let the student take a few classes and then decide. I have even seen where people don't wear a belt for a week. I do think you should always retain your black belt unless you just don't train and forgot everything. "First learn stand, then learn fly. Kicks
SOme let you keep your rank and others want you to start over If I were to change styles I'd expect to start over. I have a BB in TKD, but if I were to start taking Karate I would want to start at white belt because I don't know the karate katas and the differences in techniques. AS a black belt you are expected to not only know your art, but also be able to teach it. I don't think I would be able to teach karate unless I went through the program. But then again, maybe I'm not giving myself enough credit? when you create the world's largest trailer park, you're going to have tornadoes

TSDMGK_K40
In my school, (tang soo do) if someone wants to transfer in, then we evaluate where they belong, and thats where they start from. If someone comes in with a black belt (1st dan) and they aren't up to par with our standards, then they'll start at a lower rank, usually somewhere between 3rd gup and 1st gup. Then they'll have to earn their Cho Dan just like the rest of the students. Even when people have come in at 2nd/3rd dan, if they weren't up to our standards for that rank, then they had to earn it again, some starting at 1st dan, and testing for the successive ranks as they learned the system, others wearing their previous rank until they were prepared to cross rank, at which time they would attend our regular dan testing and cross rank. No one should be entitled to just step in and expect a rank. I'm a 4th dan in Tang Soo Do, just over a year away from testing for 5th dan, and I can tell you that I wouldn't expect any other system to just accept me at that rank without question. Little Dragon
When you do belt testings and pass you should get a certificate approving you to your next belt level.Just show the certificate to the instructor at the other school and im sure they'll allow you to stay in the same lvl. In my school, when we pass we get certificates, iono bout everyone here though.. ''I know what your thinking.........did I shoot you 3 times? or did I shoot you 472 times?'' But if you were to say try to switch from TKD to TSD, then that argument wouldn't really hold.
