Hapkido in Minnesota

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

This is my first post to this forum :) , so I want to start by getting to know whose out there that practices Hapkido in Minnesota. My training partner and I practice with a small group of individuals who are highly dedicated to learning the system and studying the principals of martial arts in general. Looking forward to hearing from all of you

Hello,

It is good to see there are some Hapkido people in Minnesota on here. Where do you guys train? I have been studying Hapkido since the beginning of the year and love it. I trained in High School for a while about 10 years ago in North Dakota, and it took me a while to find a good school close to me here in the cities since I moved here a few years ago. Anyway, welcome to the forum and I look forward to talking to you about training and stuff.

Hi Mike,

Glad to hear you got back into Hapkido. I train with a small group of guys at Training for Life on Lyndale Ave in uptown. We train everyday and teach a couple of classes each week in exchange for space. Where do you train? I know there are few schools in the Twin cities and one in Rochester. But the only other one I've visited is NATF (also on lyndale) which has a guy teaching on Tues and Thurs nights. Anyway, you're welcome to stop in and practice with us some time and exchange techniques. Take it easy

Wow there are other hapkido schools in the TC? What type of hapkido do you do if you dont mind my asking? I took Sin Moo Hapkido at a place in St. Paul for awhile but I kept getting hurt doing the falls so I left...not sure if I should take it up again or not somewhere else.

Hey fellas,

You got it 47MartialMan. Hapkido in many ways is a reorganization of JJ techniques. In fact my training partner and I work with a JJ master two nights a weeks in addition to our other training. Obviosly the Koreans say "we showed those techniques to the Japanese through a diplomatic convoy in the 700's AD" But that discussion could go on of forever since many of the techniques of JJ are in Tai Chi Shaoi Chou, Ninjitsu and many other arts that are either older or about the same time as JJ. Many of the bone breaking techniques of JJ like most marial arts probably developed simultaneously among different cultures. In addition to the joint and bone technique Hapkido employs falling skills, kicks (including demonstration type kicks :) throws, and breathing excercises. Do you train Jiu Jistu 47MM? Our JJ master told us that traditionally JJ students learn locks by body part, i.e. fingers, then arm, then shoulder, etc Has this been your experience? I'd like to hear more about your practice :)

Take it easy,

Hey tufrthanu,

Our orginal style of Hapkido was similar to Hankido, our Master took a lot of things from Aikido in terms of execution of the techniques. As my training partner and I have trained more with different people we've moved away from that in some ways and it has become an interesting composite allowing us to move between the ceremonial softness of Aikido and the quick direct motions of JJ. We're not affiliated with any org rather we run a small club at Training for Life in uptown. Nakbup (falling techniques) is actually one my favorite things to train so if you are interested in taking up Hapkido again or just working on your falls you're welcome to stop in and I might be able to help you with them. Let me know if you're interested I'll send you a Private Message with our training schedule.

Take it easy

Please do send the info...send your rate too just so I know what I'm getting into. It might take me awhile to get over there but if your patient I will try and get there at least a few times. Actually I just wanted to add that I do have some physical limitations I'm working on...overweight, asthma and I have to wear MA shoes. I understand totally if you'd rather not train on that basis but please let me know. :)

Ok I'll send you our schedule in a PM along with this post. Actually we have a guy who trains with us that has prosthetic legs and I have excercised induced asthma. We are a close group and all we really ask is that everyone give 100% when training together. Hapkido can be very flexible to individuals. Anyway I'll send info :)
