mkultra Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 Hi Sorry if this has been asked before but what is the difference between the 2 styles of roundhouse. How does the launch , strike and return differ , I know 1 uses the foot while the other uses the shin . Also can anyone explain the difference between a boxers left hook and a muay thai left hook? Thanks
Radok Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 Round kicking with the foot is only taught for use in point sparring. If you are doing it the traditional Okinawan way, you will be kicking with your shin. If you can't laugh at yourself, there's no point. No point in what, you might ask? there's just no point. Many people seem to take Karate to get a Black Belt, rather than getting a Black Belt to learn Karate.
SevenStar Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 it goes way deeper than use of the shin karate roundhouse kicks are chambered, where as muay thai uses a "dead leg" karate kicks tend to snap out and recoil back to a chambered position. Muay thai kicks go through the target. the recoil on the karate kick is caused by the kicker bringing his leg back quickly. in thai, the recoil is automatic created by the impact of the kick. the thai kick has three angles for attack depending on target area - diagonal, inward and downward. the base leg is bent with a low thai kick. the thai kick is usually thrown in conjunction with a step offline. the upperbody is used to counterbalance the kick, allowing great power for thai kicks. Throwing the hand out/back also has tactical advantages. karate exponents tend to keep the hands up when kicking. There are additional differences when discussing a lead leg roundhouse.
SevenStar Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 As far as the left hook goes, if I'm not mistaken, the muay thai left hook IS the boxing left hook. traditionally, muay thai only uses straight punches. the uppercut and hook were assimilated from western boxing.
mkultra Posted August 25, 2004 Author Posted August 25, 2004 Thanks. What is meant by chambering? and as for the left hook, I have only been doing MT a few weeks but they always tell me to hop into the left hook with your lead leg so you kind of spin into it with your legs. As far as im aware in western boxings version of the left hook the feet will stay planted and the spin comes from the hips. It seems to me that the western style left hook is much harder but then I am a noob. Any insight into that one. Thanks again.
cross Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 Chambering is basically lifting the knee before the kick.
SevenStar Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 The only time I throw a hook like that is if I am circling to his outside as I throw it. Otherwise, I throw it "the boxing way"
Rich_2k3 Posted August 27, 2004 Posted August 27, 2004 Personally I think the MT roundhouse kick far suppasses the Karate kick. I actually practice karate though, and we use the chanbered kick only for point sparring, for full contact we use the MT version. This may upset ppl but the MT kick is better, and that is why it is the one used in K1 and all forms of pro kick boxing. There is more momentum in the MT kick therefore more power, also the karate version telegraphs more. "When my enemy contracts I expand and when he expands I contract" - Bruce Lee
