KempoTiger Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 3.shaolin kenpo is not true shaolin. How is Shaolin Kenpo not true Shaolin? If I am not mistaken, Shaolin refers to the styles of martial arts, Chinese Shaolin monks practiced. If they concocted Shaolin Kenpo, how can you say it is not a "true" Shaolin style? "Question oneself, before you question others"
SevenStar Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 shaolin kenpo wasn't created by the monks. it was created by ralph castro and is an offshoot of kenpo karate.
Drunken Monkey Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 i would've thought the fact that 'kempo/kenpo' isn't really a chinese term would've made it quite obvious that shoalin kempo is chinese.... unless of course you really haven't been doing any real research.... post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
SevenStar Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 yeah, that's true also. kempo was the name given by the japanese. It was their trainslation of "chuan fa" the reason shaolin is in the name is because of the influence of kung fu in his system. castro was a student of william chow, whose "kara ho kempo" was a combination of kempo (kosho, I think) and 5 animals kung fu. castro's shaolin kempo emphasizes the 5 animals moreso than the kosho ryu, which is why he calls his style shaolin kenpo. In actuality though, it is by no means shaolin.

Well yes I do know the differences between the Kempo and Kenpo being Japanese and Chinese dialects, yet I had always figured that some sort of Kempo had originated in China, and that was Shaolin Kenpo. But yes I see how Shaolin Kung Fu must have been the major influence that made him call the name that. In the style of Kempo I train in, the 5 animal kung fu is a major part of training. And yes Drunken Monkey, I haven't been doing any real research so sue me "Question oneself, before you question others"
SevenStar Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 not kempo and kenpo - kempo and chuan fa. the first two are both japanese names, but I think different romanizations. chuan fa translates to kenpo in japanese. chuan fa = fist art kenpo = fist law/method
Drunken Monkey Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 .....what was that about real research? post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."

I assumed that was directed at me. "Question oneself, before you question others"

Or is that only Kempo? "Question oneself, before you question others"
Red J Posted August 25, 2004 Posted August 25, 2004 Both can, as many styles of kempo/kenpo can be traced through Chow (Chinese Kara-Ho Kempo). Check out this link for tracing certain lineages of kempo/kenpo. Some have more Chinese influence than others and add terms like Shaolin or Chinese to denote that. http://www.urbin.net/EWW/MA/KF/famtrees.html I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.
