Hudson Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Correct me if I'm wrong but here's what I gathered about training Shaolin: Physical Training is intense, a lot of endurance and flexibility issues and will make you sore for days. Martial Arts training is less valuable and practical and very much gymnastics/sport. Not authentic. (No offense to anyone in Shaolin-Do, Shaolin Kempo, or any Shaolin Gung Fu) Still, being able to say I know Shaolin blah blah blah would be cool (I know, I know, bad reason to train) Anyone know anything about training at the temple? The game of chess is much like a swordfight; you must think before you move.
Rotten Head Fok Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 IMHO you need to do more gathering. You must be stable and balanced in your foot work, if you have to use your martial knowledge in combat, your intent should be to win. If you do strike, you must release great power! The martial arts are easy to learn, but difficult to correct.
KempoTiger Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Correct me if I'm wrong but here's what I gathered about training Shaolin: Physical Training is intense, a lot of endurance and flexibility issues and will make you sore for days. "Martial Arts training is less valuable and practical and very much gymnastics/sport. Not authentic" What?? You think that all martial arts is worthless, and that it's as useful as gymnastics? Hudson Posted August 22, 2004 Author Posted August 22, 2004 No no no, what I mean is the Shaolin Wu Shu (Again, I'm looking for any help here so I can be better informed) training seems to stress a lot of dramatic and acrobatic stunts rather than fighting techniques, I don't know much about it though so any comments would be appreciated. The game of chess is much like a swordfight; you must think before you move.
Drunken Monkey Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 ...key words being 'wu-shu'. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
Hudson Posted August 22, 2004 Author Posted August 22, 2004 Heh, now I've confused myself and made some people angry. Oh well, sorry bout that. The game of chess is much like a swordfight; you must think before you move.
Karateka_latino Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Wu Shu is chinese Martial Arts and is divided in many divisions. The ones The chinese Goverment is interest in promote are the Sport Wu Shu that we often see on TV and exibitions. But, Wu Shu have also real fighting techniques that they also train in.
PPF Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Ok you are gravely mistaken, obviously you have learnt nothing about shaolin, nobody who knows shaolin classifies wu shu as shaolin, wu shu is mainly for show and acrobatics, shaolin is not only acrobatic and lots of endurance, it focuses its ephasis on a lot of conditioning, gate theory, triangle theory circular theory, when i say conditiong i dont mean push ups and crunches I mean, smacking your arms with a wooden stick so the next time u block someones kick it canes them and doesnt hurt your arms, same as shins and so on, it is very technical, and has an answer for any combative questions you could come up with, traditional authentic shaolin, grasps concepts and theories of every modern martial art is there, Karate, basics, Tae Kwon do, the long kicks are considered northern techniques, wing chun, hapkido the worlds greatest martial arts can trace thioer lineage back to shaolin, they take what they like and turn it into thir own style cos it suits them ultimately shaolin u could say teaches u everything, the monks are so well conditoned, fast and technical u wudnt be good enough to lick thier boots. Drunken Monkey Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 .......should i point out (again) that the 'authenticity' of the shoalin temple that is currently teaching in china is always questionable. it really bothers me that they're almost as revered (or should taht be worshipped?) as the ever popular 'ninja'. just want to say that you shouldn't confuse the modern shaolin monk with what they might've been originally. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
