Kenpoman42 Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Hi everyone, I am new to Shaolin kempo. I used to study Ed. Parker Kenpo Karate until I had to moved back home. When I got home I could not find any Kenpo school around. Only Tae kwon Do for a long time. But now there is a new Shaolin kempo school near by and I am going to start there. Any one has any advice on how or what I should do. ( it has been five years since I have train). If anyone has any Info on what a white belt in Shaolin Kempo will be doing or what I will be learning or could sent any step-by-step detail of what pina 1 is or 8 hand blocking set. All help who be great. Thank!!!! Alvin
Rotten Head Fok Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Welcome to Karate Forums Alvin, I would not worry about the five years, just go to class and get things started! Have fun, good luck and I am happy that your getting back into the life! You must be stable and balanced in your foot work, if you have to use your martial knowledge in combat, your intent should be to win. If you do strike, you must release great power! The martial arts are easy to learn, but difficult to correct.
Red J Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Welcome Alvin. You have nothing to worry about. 8 point is the basic blocking system consisting of 2 outside blocks, l and r, 2 inside blocks, 2 over head, and 2 downward blocks. Pinan 1 is the basic form of downward blocks combined with front punches all flowing in the basic letter "I" shape. If you need anymore PM me, but you will pick this up quick in class, especially since you have experience. Good luck. I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.
KempoTiger Posted August 20, 2004 Posted August 20, 2004 to mimic what RedJ said, yes those forms should be similar to what you learned in the Parker system. My style of Kempo is a cross somewhere between Shaolin and Parker I believe. I just had a new student sign up with my dojo who had trained in Shaolin, and the similarities were ridiculously apparent. Just a few differences in what belts they learned things, and subtleties in block and striking positions. I'm sure you'll have an easy time picking up where you left off "Question oneself, before you question others"
