Regarding belt ranks

Recommended Posts

I'm going to open a new school with the follwoing belt system:

No Belt

Egg Shell White

Snow White

Pink

Yellow

Orange

Light Green

Dark Green

Barny the Dino Purple

Deep Purple

Sky Blue

Light Blue

Royal Blue

Midnight Blue

Candy Apple Red

Dark Red

Tan

Light Brown

Medium Brown

Dark Brown

Desert Camouflage

Woodland Camouflage

Black

Then I might add stripes and lines and checkers. I can charge $50.00 a test and make the students buy their new belts and gis from me as well.

Sounds like a good system, but you might want to re-think the gis. I'm not sure light blue works well with a white gi. You might want to have them pruchase (from you of course) a different color gi for each belt. Remember, fashion isn't everything, it's the ONLY thing!

Desert Camouflage with a forest green gi... I get goose bumps just thinking about it.

Student: "Why did you hit that guy with a chair? Why didn't you use your karate?"

Master: "Hitting him with a chair was the only karate I could think of at the time."

Lesson: Practice until you don't have to think.

Boy that's a lot of ranks- do you need some help in teaching?

Life is a book, you have to read it to achieve it- invent your own novel

gcav, Spoken like a true entrepeneur(sp?). On the original thread though, I believe that you are a slightly different chung do kwan group than I come from. I'm part of the Chung Do Kwan Alliance. The ranking in our style is

white

yellow

green

purple

brown

black

There are high and low rankings for green through brown and 9 degrees of black.

Getting a blackbelt just says you have learned the basics and are ready to actually study the form as an art.

Generally TKD belts are as follows:

White-innocent

Yellow-a plant growing roots

Green-a plant growing leaves

Blue-a plant growing towards the sky

Red-danger

Black-maturity (opposite of innocence)

*Poom belts are for Black Belts under the age of 16

Not all TKD schools follow this traditional structure but most have something similar. Our school has 3 additional colors (orange, purple, and brown) which basically serve as intermediate steps to the 5 phases of growth. No matter what the color scheme is the requirements are generally the same for each gup so it really doesn't matter.

Your "red tag" blue belt with the red stripe through looks dangerously like the Tang Soo Do/Soo Bahk Do Masters' belt... Which can be either Black with a red stripe through or Midnight blue with a red stripe through one side.
