koreantiger81
Sun hang do is a flashy mixture of all martial arts...It claims to "accept all the good things from the other marital arts." This martial art was established in 1989 and now has 10 schools in VAncouver, and is expanding across canada in the near future..Is it possible for a martial arts system to spread so rapidly? Can you really learn the "good things" of all martial arts and obtain a black-belt in 3-5 years? for more info go to. http://www.sunhangdo.com Kinesiologist/TrainerBlack-Belt
Jiggy9
Pretty Intresting... However, when I read the entire site I noticed well... "The techniques of Sun Hang Do include blocking, punching, kicking and weapons." I noticed that nowhere does it mention anything about grappaling and or ground fighting...so I ask, how can one be accepting all the good things from other martial arts when it (as far as I know) neglects arts who do groundfight and grapple such as Judo and Jujitsu? Jack
That looks very interesting and promising, however as Jiggy mentioned it cannot claim to accept all of the good things from the martial arts, since it apparently lacks Throws, locks, and groundfighting. Still, looks like a great system you have there JackCurrently 'off' from formal MA trainingKarateForums.com
Karateka
Cool system, they need some spell checks on their site *hapiness*. Anyway, looks pretty cool, but no throw; no go. Jarlaxle
I am currently attending Sun hang Do classes in Maple Ridge and they DO include grappling, locks and pressure points. It's the most intensive workout I have ever endured - becuase of the incorporation of many styles.
Jack
That's great to hear Jarlaxle, maybe they ought to mention it includes those on the website. JackCurrently 'off' from formal MA trainingKarateForums.com
MichiganTKD
Sun Hang Do? Sigh... Another example of martial arts buffet that offers a little of each style without going to much in depth. They probably place ads in the backs of MA magazines telling how you too can be a superior fighter in just 3 months. Better yet, probably some no name who studied a little of various arts and decided he could make more money by throwing it all together and giving it a Korean name noone's ever heard of. Jack of all trades, master of none. My opinion-Welcome to it.

MichiganTKD
Last time I checked, Bruce Lee was dead. You can't tell me his students are anywhere near his level. My opinion-Welcome to it.
taichi4eva
michigantkd... A lot of korean styles are of a hybrid nature. Modern TKD is a culmination of five different schools. Tang Soo Do is a combination of Karate, Tan Tui, and Tai Chi. Kumdo is a combination of Japanese Kendo and "native sword techniques" (bon guk gum bup). Personally, I think these combo styles are a great idea. True, the saying "jack of all trades, master of none" applies here, but I think it's unrealistic to think that one martial art encompasses all the necessary skills that one needs in order to defend oneself. I've done kung fu before and if I was making a style, then I'd combine my kung fu with my TKD (for anyone's who's interested, it would include palgwe 1-8, chulki, bassai, twelve tan tuis, 24 step tai chi, shaolin saber, and kumdo) Learning different arts helps broaden our scope of things. People could point out a bunch of things that TKD fails to address- grappling, pressure points, etc. and as practicioners, I think it would be best if we could remedy this by assimilating techniques from other places.
