Vito
Hey everyone, this is a question for the ring fighters, cage fighters, and whoever else actually takes hits full contact. Im curious, what kind of training do you do to get your abs, obliques, and ribs into shape for taking hits? What has worked in the past and what hasnt? SevenStar
the forum doesn't know/care what belt you are - it's based on posts. This was your first post, so you are a forum white belt. vito - have a training partner drop a medicine ball on your stomach as you are in the exhaling phase of a crunch. Do this for 5 mins. throw the medicine ball at eachother. Don't just outright catch it though - let it hit you first and catch it as it begins to bounce off. spar. Luckykboxer
I have tried dozens of different exercises... from having someone smack my stomach with a handmitt everytime i go down on a situp, to medicine balls routines, there are dozens of those.. from taking punches to the midsection while having to hold 5 pound weights up in my normal stances, to taking kicks to my sides while doing the same. all i know is that every single time i did extensive training on it i would have a tougher time recovering for my actual fights, so i stopped doing any of it other then what i got in a few medicine ball routines i do, and the shots i take while sparring. i am sure if you do it in moderation it would probably help, but i dont think you need to do much, and actually i believe if you do too much it will hurt you in the long run
Fat Donkey
:)We always did at least 45min of core exercise per class. IE about 8 to ten types of ab exercise for 30 reps each. Double for fight training. Protecting yourself against body blows is like anything else a)good conditioning and B) protecting the sensitive spots eg diaphraghm, short ribs , kidneys. Taking medium to semi hard body blows from a partner is also good because u instinctively learn to tense and It has always helped with my digestion Donkey
Vito
all very interesting answers... but what i meant was what kind of exercises did you do to get your abs into shape- crunches, weighted situps, etc. also though- what about your obliques? anyone do those drills on your sides rather than abs? Luckykboxer
OOPS lol i read that question wrong i guess haha. you know one excercise that is great is decline sit ups, you have to use a decline situp bench... a way to hit the obliques real well is when you get to the top to twist your torso to the left adn then the right... or visa versa and then go back down.. another good one is to sit on you rear, keep your legs together and lift them off the ground legs slightly bent... have your torso also off the ground at almost 45 degrees.... and twist your torso back and forth from left to right, do what you can,,, start at ten reps each set for 3 sets, then move up as you can... this always kicks my *. V ups are good.. I personally have always prefered exercises that combine the two.. I also do not like working out with weights when doing abs or obliques, the main reason being that when you train with weights you get bigger... Go look at a Flex muscle mag, or a muscle and fitness and look at the weightlifters side profiles, you see how their abs are ripped? YES.... now you see how their abs stick out? EWWW i hate that never want to have that.
Vito
really? ive always wanted to have that- maybe not the the point of professional body builders, but big enough to be noticed and strong. taking hits, however, is still my number one concern.
