Just started Hapkido

Recommended Posts

I went to my first hapkido class this past Monday. I fell in love. We worked on stretching, high /low blocks, punching, Kibon Hyung, falls, one take-down, and one wrist break. The class was two hours long. I plan attending twice a week. Is this enough?

Thanks,

Welcome to Karate Forums Tomahawk!

Glad you enjoyed your first Hapkido class.

Yes, I think that for a beginner twice-a-week training is a good start. You'll be able to remember more than if you just went once a week, but you'll not be overdoing it at first by training in as many classes as possible.

When you get more confident with it and have been training a while you could move up to 3x a week.

Also, try and work on your Hapkido techniques at home. Even if you only practice 10 or 15 mins a day it will help you to remember stuff. Students who train at home progress much faster and tend to stick with martial arts longer than students who just attend classes.

hapkido is a great all around style. keep it up. start of with twice a week then after a couple of months go to an extra class a week. avoid going too much it may burn you out.

Hi, welcome to Karate Forums. I'm glad you enjoyed your first class, I think three times a week is good for beginners. Training at home will help. Good Luck and Enjoy!

You must be stable and balanced in your foot work, if you have to use your martial knowledge in combat, your intent should be to win. If you do strike, you must release great power! The martial arts are easy to learn, but difficult to correct.

i dont know much of anything about hapkido- but from what you went over it sounds like a good, well rounded class. what the hell is kibon hyung?

Kibon Hyung is a Hapkido form. It is a very basic series of low/high blocks and low/high punches. It involves turning and using a walking stance.
