CloudDragon
Great to hear your thoughts, I saw the XMA web site and they don't seem to promote it as a self defense or fighting style. I do see alot of "attitude" in it though, that doesn't seem to mesh with the principles of martial arts. A Black Belt is just a white belt that don't know when to quit! Mu Ryuk
Like many people have said, it's about the school. As long as the teacher admits and emphasizes that it is NOT for fighting, go for it. Do what you like. It's definitely not easy to do, and it's great for flexibility and balance. I had to go with "It's just a fad", that's as close as I can get to my beliefs. That being said, the XMA official black belt just upsets me. The uniforms are just stupid, in my opinion, but they should really keep traditional belts out of respect. Yes I am aware that the uniform and colored belt system is not very old itself, but still. Battousai, if you know, what are the schools belt tests like? What are they graded on? Tang Soo! Passion transcends pain.
CloudDragon
Hehehe, I saw the black belt in the century catalog. It is similar to the web gear belt I wore in the military! What I can't believe is the $200 + cost of a uniform! A Black Belt is just a white belt that don't know when to quit!
aefibird
How much??? That's ridiculously expensive... "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." The Beautiful South - The Rose of My CologneSheffield Steelers!
battousai16
yes, the whole thing is ludicrously expensive. no, i don't know what testing is like, but i have a friend who goes to the school; i ask her. and yes, i give her a lot of crap for it though i don't like it, i still don't seem to have the seething hatred for it that the lot of you do. unknown
I'm not saying that XMA is easy to do - it is mostly gymnastics though. I saw the show on the discovery channel about XMA and I was just dissapointed by the fact that they kinda promote it as a fighting art when obviously it is not. mya
Question · What is XMA? Answer · What is XMA? XMA was conceived by seven-time National and seven-time World Forms & Weapons Champion, Mike “Chat” Chaturantabut, one of the most successful and experienced tournament competitors in the history of the sport. As one of the pioneers of Sport Karate, Chat has combined the styles and philosophies of several athletic and artistic disciplines into the only step-by-step training system that is backed by medical science and includes all of today’s cutting-edge martial arts choreography as seen on the national and international tournament scene as well as featured in Hollywood’s top grossing motion pictures and popular television shows. Chat created the first and most successful Sport Karate performance training camp in the world. He has coached six World and twelve National Forms and Weapons Champions, founded two of the most successful competition teams on the circuit, conducted over 100 martial arts seminars and workshops around the world, and has trained and choreographed for Hollywood’s top stunt coordinators, action directors, and stunt men. from: http://www.xmarevolution.com/phpnuke/modules.php?name=FAQ&myfaq=yes&id_cat=1&categories=What+is+XMA%3F Sound like a rip off. Goju 4 Life
I unfortunately have fallen into the generation of xma. I can do a handful of tricks. It's completely true that most moves have no real application. But, it's flashy and good for demos. a really good sight where uc an watch vids of xma is https://www.club540.com If i had to choose between karate and everything else, I would choose karate so i could beat up whoever made me make the decision and have everything else
Drunken Monkey
....i say nothing wrong with it except perhaps the name, which is what a lot of people have an issue with, esp. the guys who actually train in a fighting system. but i say don't discredit what them guys do. they spend a lot of time and effort, much more than the majority of us here training in the thing that they love and enjoy. that alone deserves respect. and seeing as so few of us actually actively train at an xma type of place, very few of us are truely qualified to judge what/how they teach. a lot of guys go to say that xma type stuff isn't for fighting but how many xma guys actually say that the flash is for fighting? that is just something that the non-xma guy attributes to the xma guys. it's just as false as saying TKD doesn't produce fighters or traditional styles don't work or bjj only knows how to ground fight or stand-up styles don't know how to grapple post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite." CloudDragon
You know, after reading these posts, I think that the XMA isn't such a horrible thing. My only beef is that the call it a martial art. Sure, its alot of super cool tricks that I will never be able to do, but my issue is that even XMA people say it isn't for fighting. Well sorry to burst any bubbles, but "Martial art" is used to describe arts for war or fighting. Maybe they could call it "Xtreme Super Happy Jumpy Flippy Pseudo-Fighting"? It's just a thought. A Black Belt is just a white belt that don't know when to quit!
