47MartialMan Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 Good point But JKD,BJJ,JJ,Aikido,Shaolin, gets a lot of hype to almost a point of "over-rated". Thus, it can be considered a "bandwagon" or "fad". But, this is not to state that they are not good.
JKDkid2 Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 I agree since the characters are chinese JKD should be noticed as a chinese martial arts.
47MartialMan Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 So, if it is created by a Chinese, does that mean it is Chinese?
White Warlock Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 So, if it is created by a Chinese, does that mean it is Chinese? If Batman wears dentures, does that mean he's old?Bruce Lee was from China, and he had a base of Chinese MA, the JKD crest has Chinese characters. So, if i were to create a system (or philosophy), it would be an Argentine system (both my parents were from there... so...), or would it based on the systems i studied, and thus be an 'international' system? I would say that the base of JKD is Chinese, I belive whether it is a style or concept is not the question, but from where the roots of JKD grow.it may not be the question, but it is definitely the answer. Many of the philosophies entombed in JKD are not Chinese. In fact, JKD was a breakaway from traditional Chinese thought on the study of martial arts, and was encouraged by Mr. Lee's experiences in the United States. I.e., Western influenced Chinese guy. IMHO it begins from a Chinese base and branches out into all styles, and is a living breathing thing, always open to change and individual interpretation.Well, you're entitled to your opinion. Just kidding. In truth, JKD is a study into martial art theories and is not rooted in Chinese. It is a delving into various applications, and is geared towards continuously learning, striving, morphing. So, JKD doesn't change... for it is not a system. Ideas, theories, and deductions can be included into a tome of accumulated data, to help others strive for their individual paths, but JKD itself... merely serves to point the way. 47MartialMan Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 If my underwear is brown to they have to be cleaned? WW, I was being sarcastic using a devils-adovocate type of question To stimulate a answer. Somewhat a metaphor. I like the Batman one, too I like the JKD description, people struggling learn it sometimes miss the point.
shotokanwarrior Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 In the book, BRUCE LEE-JEET KUNE DO, page47 under jeet kune do origin and development it says " What is jeet kune do (JKD)? Chinese martial art, definitely! It is a kind of chinese martial art that does away with with distinction of branches, an art that rejects formality, and an art that is liberated from tradition" Where Art ends, nature begins.
White Warlock Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 I'm sorry, i do not have that book. Did Bruce Lee write that particular paragraph? "When you are able to take the keys from my hand, you will be ready to drive." - Shaolin DMV TestIntro
shotokanwarrior Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 I asume is was written by him. its Bruce Lee's commentaries on the martial way. Edited by John Little and has a little intro by Linda Lee and a foreward by Ted wong. Where Art ends, nature begins.
shotokanwarrior Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 If you like reading about JKD and Bruce, I recomend this one its good. " I've lost faith in the Chinese clasical arts-though I still call mine chinese" pg.53 Where Art ends, nature begins.
White Warlock Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 And there it is. Creator's entitlement. Thanks shotokanwarrior. I may pick that one up sometime. Probably has a lot of the same material as the Tao of Jeet Kune Do book, but the few tidbits of additional notes may make it worth the expense.
