Personal training in uniforms

Recommended Posts

My real question, once again, was wether wearing your gi outside the dojo is somehow insulting to teh school or disrespectful to the art...

i guess the most direct answer to this would be 'no'.

(unless you were challenged in which case,

if you lose, then you would've dishonoured the uniform.

in which case, simple solution; don't wear it)

but then other issues come up.

forget about your 'right' to wear whatever you want , where-ever you want,

the fact is,

wearing your gi outside of the dojo or group training environment is asking for trouble.

you can say that idiots will be idiots

and that it isn't your fault,

but if you know fire burns, don't stick your hand in it.

thanx for the advice, i see what you are getting at and partially agree...

i have to say that will still try and go ahead with this. Cautiously but ever forward. First of all i'll need to talk it over with the principle and certain teachers, and i'll go from there. I'll start off with gi pants and shirt at first and if the atmosphere does not become negative i'll think of wearing full gi with white belt... I wont trey to barge in with ear tearing kia, i'll feel my way through...

thanks for the advice and help everyone

Looks like we've wasted our time trying to talk you out of wearing the gi in school. So I'll be quiet now. Wear the dang thing and if you wear a belt, wear your current rank at least, you're gonna put up a show no matter what :D (I really don't get it .. you come to ask for advice and when we go and provide you with it, you just become defensive and do it your way. If you look at the posts, you'll se almost everybody said it would be better to leave the costume home, but ... do it your way.)

Good luck with your training abd tell us how it went.

You ask about disrespect? I think it would be disrespectful.

I know my instructor would be totally against me wearin my gi in public. We had a karate demo the other day, the dojo is about 5 or so minutes walk to the green where the demo was to be held, and yet if we went to the dojo to get changed we were driven down to the green. He says that you will get morons trying to pick fights with you, and how does that reflect on the dojo? Ok, it may not even be your fault but people won't see it like that.

IMO if you want to practice then practice, but it should be a personal thing, not a show of "Hey, look at me I'm a martial artist". It's not a spectacle.

Do you get taught about humility at your dojo?

not at all ramymensa... i hear your advice and that of others and took it into deep consideration. I still have a month till school starts, so i'll be thinking about it till then at any rate. Nothing is done until it's done...

i see that you have a strong view on this, BUT consider this:

1. If that is what you think if you see a person in a gi training... then quite frankly you're immature and not worthy of MA

2. I believe i've said i before, but i'll say it again: I am NOT planning to wear my gi to boast or "show off" or to get special attention.

My kimano is my training uniform. True, it represents me as a karateka, but how does doing kata or any MA related exercise, even in plain clothes, not show the very same?

I do not intend to hide from anyone who i am and what i want to become, niether do i intend to challange anyone with my training. I do not believe that being a martial artist is anything special, it is possible for anyone to become one and achieve mastery with enough dedication to the cause. I take pride in this belief and take pride that i have commited myself to this course. If someone feels threatened or challanged by this, then there is just nothing i can do that they are not willing to do themselves... to accept and to respect. in no way will i try and force any of those around me to commit to the cause i follow, because free will is the only possible gate way to MA...

It is also my deepest wish that through my training i may enlighten some people and help them see that which they what but could not. Such is the case with a few ppl here

gi and kimono are not the same thing.

this has been bugging me for quite a while now...

and quite frankly, it kinda says something about you.

i mean, if you don't even know that your training outfit/uniform isn't a kimono (that you can't even spell)...

and anyway.

why do you need to train before school in the hall?

what's wrong with your home?

why do you need to train at lunch times and breaks?

that's time for friends and socialising and hell maybe even for reading a book.

If that is what you think if you see a person in a gi training... then quite frankly you're immature and not worthy of MA

and i say if you insist that you can/should wear your gi for training outside of the dojo then i say you are immature and stupid and don't deserve our attention.

I am NOT planning to wear my gi to boast or "show off" or to get special attention

it doesn't matter what you think or intend to do.

the question isn't with you

(although more and more i think otherwise...)

the point is, the gi WILL get you attention.

It is also my deepest wish that through my training i may enlighten some people and help them see that which they what but could not. Such is the case with a few ppl here

no offence here mate but this is just another sign of your arrogance....

what can you, a green belt, someone who isn't even halfway through the learning process teach?

that line just furthers goes to show that you want people to know you do karate

that you are really involved

and that you are 'superior'.

so far, everything i have read in this thread is just you justifying why you should wear your gi depsite words from many people who are in a much better position to give advice than you or i, that go to say otherwise.

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for setting me on the righteous path. I will go and tell my Sensei RIGHT NOW that I will quit until I am 'mature' enough to be 'worthy' for studying a martial art...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

never have i expected such negativity in a place like this...

i do appologize for confusing kimono and gi... that was my ignorance, and i should have known better...

as for spelling... well, if you judge a person by how well he/she can spell a word, ur missing quite a bit

the reason i want to train during the school day is because once it starts that is the only opportunity i will have... and i for one what to put in as much time into MA as i possibly can so that i may achieve my goals, and because i want to do it

And plz don't worry about my social life... first off, it's my own, second it's fine the way it is.

what can you, a green belt, someone who isn't even halfway through the learning process teach

i don't think i ever said i'd teach, i even said i will NOT under any circumstances

as for you AngelaG, i do admit i may have been rash and hot-headed, such is my nature... BUT i still hold that if a person wishes to train in uniform in public, that does NOT automatically mean that person is showing off or make a spectical

sorry if anyone else felt insulted or offended... i truly did not mean to hurt anyone

BUT i still hold that if a person wishes to train in uniform in public, that does NOT automatically mean that person is showing off or make a spectical

and this is what i have been saying.

it doesn't matter what you think or intend.

it is how other people wil perceive you.

you can't stop people thinking you are showing off

BUT

you can prevent some of it by NOT TRAINING IN YOUR GI.

but like i said,

all you seem to have been doing is justify why you can

as opposed to listening to what we say.
