youremean
Great ideas, guys. So far, we have keeping your distance, getting a better angle so you can counter his bearhug, kicking his leg, grabbing his leg, and punching him and more. Thanks. I don't know a lot about grappling, so I can't really give my opinion on these until I've tried them (which I will asap ) And I find that dropping my weight does help a lot because he can't get a lot of leverage that way. To answer your question, Shorin Ryuu, he bearhugs me in the front and under my arms, but I'm sure if he got the chance, he would get behind me or over my arms. It's kind of hard though, because my hands are always up, and I always try to keep him in front of me. Sevenstar, sorry I don't train with Mr. Miller. Vito
you know, after some thought... i think the best thing to do would be learn a little grappling yourself. (go figure eh?) at least enough to counter and escape throws/holds so that you can attempt to stike him to death. Shane
If you are only a striker then you need to use it to its fullest, by that I mean hitting hard while standing and if you get took down you need to go down hitting. Remember HARD HARD hits can help decide an outcome of a fight (HELP), also those elbows are an awsome tool for many positions you will find yourself in against a grappler. MOST OF ALL I WOULD SUGGEST learning grappling to go with your striking skills. The two together make an awsome combo and makes you a well rounded fighter since 80%-90% of fights go to the ground!!!!!! Go down hitting and then put your grappling skills to use!!!!!!!!!!! GhostlySykanRyu
Pull out the tanto. Grapplers hate knives ... Anyway, theres not a whole lot that hasn't been said here. I was pondering this today just so I could write it down, and I of course got basically the same strategies. Being well rounded basically keeps any style from overcoming you, it's the key. 80 to 90 percent on the ground? Where are these 10-20 percent where no one gets knocked down? I know what you meant, I'm just being a smart-* To condemn the art of another is to condemn your own as well. We all have the same origin.

dear john
it may sound dumb, but the less you strike the less he can do. the funny thing is that i know im wrong and i know your right, yet you keep argueing like it will change my mind. you should really know, you dont have to be right to win:)
thaiboxerken
Learn how to sprawl, this really bothers alot of Jujitsu guys who aren't very good at takedowns. You sprawl, then knee or punch them as you back out. Of course, if he's good at take-downs, you better be better at sprawling. Of course, if you have a knife... Just kick 'em, they'll understand.- Me Apprentice Instructor under Guro Inosanto in Jun Fan Gung Fu and Filipinno Martial arts.Certified Instructor of Frank Cucci's Linxx system of martial arts. dear john
Heres some advice when fighting a JiujJitsu fighter-Don't hit the ground. HAHA in the end this is really the best advice. as a striker you are weakest on the ground and he is strongest. STAY OFF THE GROUND the funny thing is that i know im wrong and i know your right, yet you keep argueing like it will change my mind. you should really know, you dont have to be right to win:)
SoonerJohn
Over under, crossface, or even just trap both arms and throw if he is smaller than you. But work on your sprawling first. Since all he is doing is bearhugging you it implies he is a novice at takedowns, it should be easy to counter with a little knowledge.
