Zaknafein
This isnt quite on topic, but..meh. I just remember watching Enter the Dragon, when Bruce Lee was about to fight that scar face guy who breaks the board in front of him, to intimidate him. Then Bruce Lee is like "Boards..dont hit back." I just loved that part. Joecooke007
Breaking boards promotes self confidence and self awareness of your own strength. My grandmother always says, "Joe, you don't know your own strength", and then I remember that I can break a wood board with my bare hands and it amazes me. If you wnat to break a board but you can't try these tips. 1. Do not focus on punching the board but focus on punching through it. 2. It helps me to imagine that there is an energy within and when I punch a board I imagine my energy flowing through my hand. 3. Confidence is KEY!!! You can't be afraid of hurting yourself. Trust me, the first time you'll be surprised at how little breaking can hurt. If you follow these tips over time breaking will be like second nature. Boards don't hit back. -Bruce Lee
KickChick
In reading these threads on board breaking... everyone is referring their breaks as to the board they broke. What is the maximum number of boards (inches of each) that you all have broken? I know after a certain number spacers are used....we've had a 10 board break and a 12 board patio block/cement break and a very impressive ice break done 8 sheets about 2 inches thick. (I have the cement break posted on my web page). Personally I am up to 5 boards but now trying to work on speed breaks for my next degree.
SaiFightsMS
I may be a bit odd, but, knowing that I have broken one board with a variety of techniques I do not feel the need to go after multuple boards. I think if I did go on to more breaking it would be to work on speed breaks.
KickChick
For advanced belt promotion in TKD it is required for us to break more than one board. Single board breaks are for beginners... at green belt level 2 board breaks are required unless doing a speed break technique. To be promoted to black belt, one must break 3 boards (4 different times...3 w/hand, another 3 w/hand, 3 w/foot and another 3 with foot). Anyone can break one board with brute strength, but strength alone begins to fail as the number of boards increases. Only concentrated power and precise techniques will prevail when breaking more than one board. Advanced breaking techniques are not measured alone by the number of boards broken but instead by the difficulty of the technique itself. To break more than one board requires training and study of the wood itself, such as its composition, hardness, how the grain of the board is positioned, and the curvature of the board. _________________ Tae Kwon Do Blk Belt 1st deg./Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2001-12-24 10:32 ]
SaiFightsMS
Good points Kickchick. We focus on ambidexterity before multiple boards. And I assure you brute force is not my forte. I don't think I am being complacent but I do realized because of the ms there will be a limit to what I can ultimately achieve. And I will hit it before a healthy person of the same age. I think for the time being speed is where I should focus. I do like hearing other opinions though.
SBN Doug
Well, I've done 4 1in. boards (no spacers) held by three blk belts, with a jump, spin, back, side kick (di tora yup cha gi) for competition. I've done 3 boards with no spacers (held) with most of my other jump kicks. Haven't tried 4 in the others, just haven't really had a reason. I'm sure I could get through them with most. I'm stuck at 3 boads, held with no spacers, on my palm strike. I just haven't been able to focus my speed enough yet to get through 4. 4 with no spacers is basically my goal for any technique. I figure if I can get through that, that's good enough to get through any amount of muscle. Kuk Sool Won - 4th danEvil triumphs when good men do nothing. KickChick
Can anyone direct me to a web site which sells a board holder system or does anyone have plans or directions on such a system which uses a spring assembly that can hold up to 8-10 boards without the aid of a person. I have someone willing to look into making such a device for me. I did have a web site where I was looking into purchasing such a system ... but site is no longer up (https://www.powerboardholder.com) HELP! SBN Doug
Another question. To anyone who has broken both, how to bricks compare to boards? Kuk Sool Won - 4th danEvil triumphs when good men do nothing.
