it's a friggin' label, like geek, jock, or kitchen appliance. It's a means to simplify, by stereotyping.

I study the martial arts, but i am not a martial artist. I draw, but i am not a sketch artist. I work on computers, but i am not a computer tech or computer guru. I do a lot of other things, but that does not make me those things... it only makes me capable of performing those things, or showing an interest in them. I... am me.

Jackie Chan said it well when he said, "i am not a martial artist. I do stunts." He didn't say he was a stuntman, but that he performed stunts. He didn't claim to be some 'stereotype,' although he admits to studying a variety of martial arts.

To me, there are no martial artists, except in the context of simplification for an argument or making a point. However, in the physical realm... they don't exist. If you want simplification, that's fine... but everyone is unique, and it is these unique characteristics that make us worth knowing.

a real martial artist in my mind is a person that studies the martial arts for the purpose of bettering themselves not competing in tournaments, trying to be better at fighting someone and all that, trophies dont make a martial artist.

Intereting.. If anything I'd go the opposite and say that a Tank Driver had a real martial art and a boxer did not; as tank driving is suitbale for war ("martial" comes from "Mars", the Roman god of war) and boxing is not.

ahhh, but they'd both have good 'kung fu'.....

not that 'kung fu' necessarily meant 'martial art'

And Say you get in a fight, you do somthinbg to that person that needs treated right away our they might die, heres your chooses u leave they die you stay and know what your doing they live. What would you do let that person die.

I agree with granmasterchen trophys are worthless what are you going to do in a fight bet them with it :D

A man studys an art, but he beats his wife and starts fight with everyone acts like a big man, does that mean his a martial artist our a prick who needs his day and jail.

You don't need to become a doctor..

When martail arts where first developed they used it to help people not to hurt them and theynew how to take care of the problem they did to the other person/people.

..so does being a martial artist involve being a good person, leading a good and honest life?

i thought that was part of being a decent human being....

in any case, if being better than yourself and being a good honest person and all that what a martial artist is then bruce lee doesn't qualify....
