JerryLove Posted August 3, 2004 Posted August 3, 2004 Can Anyone tell me what a real martial artist is Someone who practices a martial art and who actually exists physically in our timespace? https://www.clearsilat.com
SanSoo Posted August 3, 2004 Author Posted August 3, 2004 A martial artist is someone who study's an art yes. A real martial artist is someone who learns how to fix what they have done to an opponent, some one who use's their skill for good and not as a hero or to win trophys. A martial artist gives things up in his life so he can study to become better. To be a martial artist is not to be able to beat someone up or save someone, but to beat yourself and save your self from your inner demons. Your life should be spent becoming the best you can. Bruce Lee died and became a martial artist. He became the best he could. He fought many battels but fought more within himself and won must or he wouldn't have been as good as he was. $&!84pat
granmasterchen Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 a real martial artist in my mind is a person that studies the martial arts for the purpose of bettering themselves not competing in tournaments, trying to be better at fighting someone and all that, trophies dont make a martial artist. Training and life long dedication to the art and the process of learning and growing towards the goal of becoming a better person, reaching an internal form of enlightenment. Not a person that is selfish and such. The term artist to me means that the person must be dedicated and willing to give up many things in their pursuit of reaching the end goal of becoming a better person. So that is my view on it. Not everyone that takes martial arts is a martial artist. Most are just people that want a hobby or play a sport and so forth. Being a martial artist is a way of life not a past time.... That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
Luckykboxer Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 hrmm i tend to disagree I think a Martial Artist is quite simply someone who studies martial arts. Now are there good and bad martial artists? sure just like there are good and bad baseball players, chess players, husbands, wives, etc.etc.etc. Saying someone else is not a martial artist only does one thing... it sets the person saying apart as an elitist. I think under the definitions listed that I am too young to be considered a martial artist in some of your eyes, at age 32 I think under the definitions listed that since i dont want to learn to be a doctor that i am not a martial artist... as far as being the best person you can be, by whos definitions are you judging whats good? Because for some people the definition of good is quite different then others. The islamic fundamentalists think the people lopping off others heads are good people.... that mean they are martial artists? Atheists that believe Christians are bad people or visa versa means what? that neither can be martial artists? Being a good person to me is i am sure quite different from some of the other peoples ideas, and i am sure that is the same visa versa. Hell i dont even thinking injuring another person is bad, if it is done under the right circumstances. /shrug
Rotten Head Fok Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 I don't know what a real martial artist is, but I know it when I see it! You must be stable and balanced in your foot work, if you have to use your martial knowledge in combat, your intent should be to win. If you do strike, you must release great power! The martial arts are easy to learn, but difficult to correct.
