Chibi
A game/warm-up that I have seen a few times in karate dojo here in Japan. The old wheelbarrow race, but the 'barrow' must use knuckles instead of flat hands. Not good for kids, but I thought some of you might like to try it with adults. AngelaG
I was always put of wheelbarrow races after, in primary school, someone's arms collapsed and they went face first into the tarmac... aefibird
Ewww, nasty... I never liked wheelbarrow races at school either, even though we used to do them on grass. Shorinryu Sensei
It sounds like a real good way to hurt your wrists. I wouldn't do it, or have my students do it either. Chibi
It sounds like a real good way to hurt your wrists. I think so, too. The teacher said in 25 years teaching he's never had an injury from it. I wonder???
CloudDragon
Gotta go with Shorinryu Sensei on this one. The injury potential is too high. You have vertical and horizontal force combined with motion. Its a setup for a sprain or break, not to mention the previously stated "faceplant". As far as 25 years without an injury from it, that person is extremely lucky. Shorinryu Sensei
Here's just another quick perspective on the wheelbarrow thing. I'm 6'6" (198cm) tall and weigh 235;* (beats me how many stones [rocks? ] or KG that is), and obviously have very long armns and a long torso/back. That wheelbarrow thing would kill my back and wrists, and you'd have to have a pretty strong person on my legs to handle me. Nope, it sounds to me that the disadvantages would far outweigh any advantages regardless of how a person is built. Injuries, even long term injuries, could easily happen doing that sort of exercise. granmasterchen
i think it sounds fun ! i will have to play that game. That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
ramymensa
I have some back problems and the wheelbarrow would only make by back hurt more because it bends exagerrated (the person who's keeping me by the legs is always keeping me higher than by back would like). So if I want something similar I just do pushups with feet put on a bench. I can still benefit from the effort and have the back in a more natural position. I can't count the times I was dropped knees and toes down by a coleagu who just couldn't hold my legs World Shotokan Karate
