kmac618 Posted July 26, 2004 Posted July 26, 2004 I've been wanting to get into some kind of martial arts and Muay Thai seems like the best for me because it seems similar to street fighting. I'm 5'7'', 147 pounds and I don't have any experience in any kind of martial arts. I've been looking into a school in Thailand- http://www.martialartsphuket.com They do up to 6 hours a day of training, 6 days a week. If I go, I plan on staying for 4 months. I go to the gym a few times a week and I'm in pretty decent shape. Would I be able to handle the training if it's pretty intense? One of the reasons I started to get interested in Muay Thai is the hard training. I like the idea of pushing myself for a purpose, not just to look better. I don't want to be pushing myself so hard that I can't walk and start to piss blood though. After the 4 months, will I be ready to fight other beginners? How should I do against people who aren't Muay Thai fighters? (I know it's different for every person) I'm not a tough guy, just a normal kid, but it should help at least a little bit in street fights, right? Also, at 147 pounds, what weight class would I be in? What do you all think about the school? http://www.martialartsphuket.com It would come out to around $365 a month... pretty cheap.
Luckykboxer Posted July 26, 2004 Posted July 26, 2004 well this would be a great opportunity for someone who was serious about it. My main reservation is if you havent trained in it at all then you may not like it. These camps are serious business. you sleep in shared rooms... basic... no tv... just the bare necessities. you work out all day long. food is basic... rice some basic vegetables and little of anything else. water...and more water... it is literally hard core training. If you went there for 4 months and made it through without injuries and with having trained the entire time i would imagine your skill level would be fairly high. If you are an athletic person, and catch on quick, and thrive on that type of environment then i would be so bold as to say your skill level could be greater then kickboxers who train 1-2 hours a day three days a week for upwards of a year or more. the training and the environment are incredible. But like i said i wouldnt jump on it without having tasted the art at least a little, and without getting to know what you are facing

kmac618 Posted January 7, 2005 Author Posted January 7, 2005 I just wanted to bring this thread back up. and thanks to the people who answered the first time. what do you think about these? so far i like the first two the most. the first one is the cheapest and it looks pretty good but i don't know about living in chiang mai. it seems like it's right in the middle of the jungle and i'd be too nervous about malaria and other parasites... i originally said 4 months but i think that would be too long. 2 or 3 might be better. how do you think the average person would be after going to one of those camps for 2 or 3 months? they seem more for foreigners than people who are really serious about muay thai. i http://www.lannamuaythai.com/ http://www.rawaimuaythai.com/index_muaythai.html http://www.bestmuaythai.com/ http://www.thaiboxings.com http://www.mightyoak.co.uk/sasiprapa/site/aboutus.htm http://www.rawaimuaythai.com/index_muaythai.html

Infrazael Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 GO FOR IT!!!!! It seems like a VERY SERIOUS Muay Thai camp, go and train!!! With a style like MT, in 4 months (of very intense rigorous training) you should be up to speed in your abilities. Good luck.
