CapitalKarate Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 I was just wondering... what would be the best martial art for the knife? of any kind. What would be the best art for knife attack, and what would be the best for knife defense, and for restraint? i'm just looking to become a master at using a knife (even tho nunchaku would work better against an opponent with a knife and better for restraint, lol) Joshua Brehm-When you're not practicing remember this; someone, somewhere, is practicing, and when you meet them, they will beat you.
Ravencroft Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 Phillipino escrima/arnis whatever you wanna call it. sayoc kali in particualar. i have not come acroose one style in the entirte world that can match its knife fighting.
battousai16 Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 hwarang do has knife fighting too, but you probably don't spend as much time with it as you would in kali/arnis/escrima/whatever. and kali sticks are cool "I hear you can kill 200 men and play a mean six string at the same time..."-Six String Samurai
ZR440 Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 Yup, the Filipino blade arts are very good. But, don't go thinking that is all there is to it. It's normally incorporated within a complete system. That's where it makes it truly effective. It's happy hour somewhere in the world.
Ravencroft Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 well yeah obviously..kali is a very complete system because there is so much incorporated into it but they are just known for their weapons usage(in paricaulr knife and sticks) above anything else. that aspect is what makes it so militaristic.
CapitalKarate Posted July 19, 2004 Author Posted July 19, 2004 is there a secific phillipino/arnis/kali art that was created for the sole purpose of learning the knife? Joshua Brehm-When you're not practicing remember this; someone, somewhere, is practicing, and when you meet them, they will beat you.
Martial_Artist Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 Phillipino is incorrect. It is Filipino. The country is the Republic of the Philippines. Filipino/a is someone from the Philippines. Filipino/Tagalog is the national language. "I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination.Imagination is more important than knowledge.Knowledge is limited. Ravencroft Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 Yes there is, like i said earlier its called sayoc kali. its what they teach the special forces. it is totally edged weapon fighting like the knife.
CapitalKarate Posted July 20, 2004 Author Posted July 20, 2004 oops, my mistake Martial_Artist, thanks raven, would you happen to know where i could find a listing of sayoc kali schools? Joshua Brehm-When you're not practicing remember this; someone, somewhere, is practicing, and when you meet them, they will beat you.
tommarker Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 http://sayoc.com/ http://www.jamesakeating.com/ is another good one. You might also find Indonesian arts, such as silat, pekiti-tersia, etc to be up your alley. Since you are in NOVA, you might see if Amante Marinas still teaches his style of pananandata. Last time I heard, I think he was in Fredericksburg, but he is really a living legend, and from our correspondence, a very nice man. Technically, all FMA styles are knife oriented, whether they use rattan sticks or fake knives. The motions transfer from empty hand usage up to machetes I'm no longer posting here. Adios.
