Hmmm....if you were to time a flowing-hand block perfectly....maybe....

Nah....I'd try the old "Hey, is that Britney Spears naked over there?" trick, and then run when the gunman is distracted.

10' away does not provide you a melee attack option, only a defense option, so martial arts (as we have come to refer to all this melee hitting stuff) isn't really much of a factor. Also, at that range the gun isn't the threat and neither is the bearer of the gun. It is the bullet.

At 10' away, running away isn't much of an option, other than giving the shooter a slowly shrinking, but otherwise stationary target. If you want to try and run, do so perpendicular to the shooter, and towards the nearest cover (not concealment... cover).

Cover is any object that would provide full or partial physical protection. An object that would act as a barrier between you and the bullet. Get something between the shooter and you. A tree, an ugly person, a mother-in-law, something.

If cover is not available, pose your right side forward, knees bent, and keep an eye on the angle of the barrel. The right side forward adds just a little more protection for your heart, although it exposes your liver. The knees bent allows you the option of kissing your * goodbye, should such an opportunity arise.

Unless he's actually trained / practiced with a fire-arm, he's reliably deadly only to about 20-30ft.

Responses are *highly* situational. If he's after anything less than your life, just give it to him.

Depending on his waryness, general readyness, etc, you may be able to move 10', or distract him and move 10' before he can begin his reaction. So lunging into him (preferrably with a little lateral movement in case he remembers to pull but forgets to reaim) my let you get to him unshot.

Also, even if he does shoot and hit you, yo umay well be able to continue the fight. The focus here must be on getting to him even more than avoiding the weapon.

You can also run. Again, his reactions and aim come into play and again, even if you get shot, you may still escape.

Hope the fates like you.

WW and JL said a lot of what i was going to say.

I'll just add to their points:

If he didn't already shoot you, he probably wants something else from you. So you have a little room to act. If your negotiating/acting skills are good, you may be able to sucker him in closer. If what he wants is you, he may get closer any how. If you can give him what he wants, and you judge that the chances of him killing you any how are less than your chances of dieing if you act, give it up. If not, react- what have you got to loose?

I have seen techniques to close distance from across a room and disarm a gun wielding opponent. I can't do them, and they rely on speed and evasiveness and are no guarantee. I did counter them reliably the first time I was shown them, useing a one shot toy dart gun. I doubt the average stupid thug would be able to do it reliably, but even a-holes get lucky. Try it if you want.

if it's a robbery attempt, take your wallet and toss it to the right and in back of him. when his eyes follow the wallet run to the left.

if he just wants to shoot you, offer him your wallet in exchange, then throw it in his face and take off, maybe a little zig zag would be good.

Do you remember that lawyer in LA(or maybe someplace else about 3 months ago) who was chased and shot by his client , he was jumping left and right and finally escaped all 6 bullets by putting a tree between himself and the shooter, it was a unique and rear video.

In Kenpo, we have a technique specifically designed for this.

1.) Step forward with your right foot, while reaching behind your back with your right hand.

2.) Firmly grasp the handle of your MP5K (other, more traditional styles prefer the Uzi), then slight it downward in a quick motion, much like a downward block.

3.) Perform a hard-ground roll, while slamming a clip from your belt (rank doesn't matter, though I have found that green works the best) into the empty space in your gun.

4.) Flick off the safety with your left hand while simultaneously releasing several three round bursts in the general direction of whoever is ugliest around you.

5.) Using a motion similar to an upward block, position the gun in a way so that you can blow your own brain out, since there is no way in **** you'll be able to fight a guy with a gun from ten feet away.
