Steinhauers Posted July 15, 2004 Posted July 15, 2004 Hello, I'm training for nationals in Akron, Ohio. I only have a 8oz. gi so I was wanting something more stiff so I will look better and get good snaps into my punches. I have been looking at 2 different gi's. One is 100% brushed canvas cotton. The other is 55% cotton and 45% Polyester. I was wondering if there is any difference in they way they will look? Will it shrink the first few times I wash it? If so about how much will it shrink? Help me decide which one to get because I dont' know the difference. Here are the links to the 2 different gi's http://www.martialartssupermarket.com/index.cfm?action=moreinfo&itemid=1064 and here is the other one. http://www.martialartssupermarket.com/index.cfm?action=moreinfo&itemid=8585 Also I would like to ask one more thing. I shift between 190lbs and 200lbs. What size do you think I should get, keep in mind if there will be shrinking. Theres a sizing chart right in my links. Thanks everyone you have helped me out ever since I've gotten into the martial arts. You all are wonderful. Thanks, Seth
Akima Posted July 15, 2004 Posted July 15, 2004 For competition and testing get 100% cotton. Yes Tokido's are great but pricey. Century's are terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just bought a Pinetree. I like it a lot. http://www.tkdpinetree.com/ I don't like proforce light and medium weight uniforms, so I don't really look at the heavy weights. Heavy uniforms tend to be cut larger than the light ones. Cotton will shrink, so I am of the opinoin to buy larger and have the uniform tailored to you.
SaiFightsMS Posted July 16, 2004 Posted July 16, 2004 I have worn the 10 oz pro force blend gi and gotten the same amount of snap out of it as classmates in the heavier gi. It is really a matter of preference. With the material being the same weight it boils down to what kind of waist band you like and whether or not you want do deal with shrinkage.
lyrikalgeenus Posted July 16, 2004 Posted July 16, 2004 Lightweight- Looks nice but rips constantly Middleweight- best im my opinion... good support, looks nice, breaths well Heavyweight- Great for class due to its snap...I personally hate it for competition due to it constricting my legs.....
Ti Posted July 16, 2004 Posted July 16, 2004 Personally I hate the look of light weight gi. Heavy weight looks MUCH better. It holds the shape.
aefibird Posted July 16, 2004 Posted July 16, 2004 I agree Ti - I always think that medium and heavy weight gi's keep their shape better than lightweight ones. "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." The Beautiful South - The Rose of My CologneSheffield Steelers!
Pacificshore Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 Steinhauser: In my opinion, go with the heavy cotton. As far as Proforce brand goes, I know that they are cut larger than most gi's. Regarding your weight, I'd get the size 5, think it goes to 215lbs. Better bigger than smaller. It'll probably shrink some, but your gonna have to wash it in hot with no bleach. If anything, use the Tide bleach alternative. You can always get it tailored down the road if it is still a bit on the long side. Later Di'DaDeeeee!!!Mind of Mencia
Red Triangle student Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 I strongly reccomend this website: http://home.bt-webworld.com/kamae/welcome.html It has all the information you could possibly want on Gis and any Karate uniform. It has Over Twenty varieties of Gis and ordering information. I would strongly reccomend the International Gi or the Olympic Gi. All of the Gis are from 55% to 100% Cotton. and their is a lot of heavyweight competition stuff on there. "To be elated at success, and dissappointed at defeat, is to be the child of Circumstances." I wish I followed that rule! ^^ I hate Losing!
