pvwingchun Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 How many of you out there are assistant instructors in your school? We all know how it works, you get to a certain point and some of you become assistants and no longer pay tuition or pay reduced tuition. You are in limbo. You are not a paid instructor and you are not a student. I found out from my insurance agent that if someone gets hurt you are liable not the school or management. You either need to carry your own liability or be put specifically on the insurance where you train by name. This was on the advice of my insurance company. Luckykboxer Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 Any good School that is going to use you as an instructor should be willing to add you to the insurance list. Great point bringing that up though. If you dont know if you are insured then you should ask.
aefibird Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 I'm the assistant instructor for my club - I don't get paid (free training instead), but I am on the insurance document for my club. My instructor and I had a chat about it a few months ago and we decided that it would be better all round. Technically, I'm covered under the insurance of our parent organisation (for all instructors & assistant instructors within the FSK), but it's still better to be safe than sorry, so I'm also listed on the clubs own insurance too. I also have my own personal insurance, but that's only in case I get injured on the club's premises or training with the club, it doesn't cover anyone else. "Was it really worth it? pvwingchun Posted July 13, 2004 Author Posted July 13, 2004 I walked into my school this afternoon and was told I was no longer an instructor. That I would be a paying student again. I brought the insurance thing up a week or so ago to bring them up to speed so they would be covered as well as myself. I was told that after checking with their insurance they couldn't afford it........ Wing Chun Kuen Alliancehttps://www.wing-chun.us

pvwingchun Posted July 13, 2004 Author Posted July 13, 2004 Tell me about it. I have been an assistant for 1 year and full instructor now for 4 months and now this. I am a little shocked to say the least. I was so stunned I didn't know what to say I walked out and went about my business (I am leaving on vacation for 2 weeks in the morning and am a little busy) then it started to sink in..... Luckykboxer Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 ummm they may want to check with anotehr insurance company, or maybe you can do it for them. As long as you are certified in CPR and basic first aid and can provide that certification to the insurance agencies you should be able to be added on fairly cheaply... and when i say fairly cheaply i mean like 20-50 dollars more a month tops. if they are saying it costs too much, it sounds to me like they either dont have coverage now, or they dont need the intructor now, or something else odd is going on.
aefibird Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 Sorry to hear that pvwingchun. "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." The Beautiful South - The Rose of My CologneSheffield Steelers!
renketsu Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 I also have my own personal insurance, but that's only in case I get injured on the club's premises or training with the club, it doesn't cover anyone else. How did you get this... is this the standard AMA insurance or a private policy as an aside to the normal insurance? I have $5m instructor's indemnity from the AMA (UK thing) and will be paying through the club for my two assistant instructors this time round as they only teach at my request. Any student of shodan and above who is willing to sub-teach if asked can train with me free of charge, I am also allowed to train free of charge with my own senior instructor. Regards, Andy. It's a private policy, but you can get insurance cover through the EKGB (or so I heard). Students at my club are also covered by insurance though the FSK (which I *think* get's its insurance cover through the EKGB, but I could be wrong about that), but my private policy is very cheap and also has a higher payout than the regular club insurance. For less than a tenner a month I'm personally covered for up to £6million. "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..."
