Eraser
Hello I am a new kickboxer who will start competing here in a few months. My question is, how likely is it that I'm going to suffer a concussion or some sort of brain trama? I've had two concussions already and I'm in college studying sciences. I don't want to compete and not be able to handle college b/c of permenant damage to my head. How likely is it that this would happen? Could I get some feedback from some of you more experienced fighters? Thanks
Luckykboxer
well its alot less likely then it is to happen in boxing, and its alot more likely then it is to happen in chess. anytime you get your head jolted you have to realize that your brain shakes around inside your skull, it is not a good thing. are there risks? Of course. are the risks acceptable? depends on you. I couldnt live without risk, i couldnt imagine a world where i couldnt scuba dive, sky dive, fight, drive my motorcycle, shoot my guns, etc.etc. If you have a history of concussions, it is definitely more likely you will suffer another concussion, your best bet is getting a physical from your doctor, state your concerns, and get his opinion on your physical health. NOTE - if your doctor is worth his diploma he is going to tell you you are crazy to kickbox, but realize thats his job.
muaythaifreak
Some people compete for many years with no head injuries, some get a good one the first time they fight. I personally have never suffered a serious head injury, (knock on wood). Just make sure you are well trained and well prepared before you get in the ring. There is always the risk of head trauma, remember that. It's one of the risks you take when you step into the ring. As far as actual likelyhood, I really couldn't venture a guess as to the statistics, but I do know a good number of fighters who have had head injuries, but then I know more who have not. Ryan gry
it depends on how you get hit, and how you take it . i always try to put my head (chin) into my shoulders when i can't escape a hit to the head , this Kinda absorbs the hit . the best way to get hit is to not get hit at all
ramymensa
I think you should judge your situation and your motifs. I'm also a student and got involved in all sorts of "intellectual" work and I wouldn't take the risk. My work is too important to risk this. I still do MA, but not knockdown. You could go for it. It is your choice and as some of our friends said here competing in KB doesn't necessary mean you're gonna toast your brain. Think about all the aspects and you'll be able to come up with the best solution for YOURSELF. World Shotokan Karate
Fat Donkey
They did a study up here in Canada about sport injuries and football (soccer for North Americans) came up number one for concussions and broken bones believe it or not. The risks are minimal but i understand the concerns. If u luv it keep going. Your more likely to get injured playing conventional sports than Kickboxing and wear good headgear when u train.
