RONIN W
This is my crazy idea but ,when you sleep you breath in through your nose and out your mouth while having a clear mind. The dreams seem so real some time .I wonder that if I meditated for 8 hours which is a pretty average sleeping time, would I be able to have thoughts like in a dream. The other night I had a dream that I cut myself it hurt, a lot, so I woke up and when I did I still felt the pain sensation in my hand and as I cleared my eyes the pain started to go away. This makes me wonder of what the mind and spirit are capable of. Can we die in our dreams can we grow stronger or perhaps move objects with our mind. Who knows? CloudDragon
Hmm, you have tapped into an interesting part of the mind-body relationship, either that or you are schizophrenic with suicidal ideations...just kidding. Actually the mind has amazing control over what the body perceives when it comes to dreams and meditation however there is a difference between the two. While both can occur in a semi-consious state the key difference is that meditation is still directed by the mind while dreams are not guided by the mind but do tend to be influenced by a persons environment and personal issues. Some people who interpret dreams may say you have feelings of guilt about something or anxeity about changes in your life because of the thought of pain upon yourself. But I would suggest that you research dreams and meditiation further as they are both interesting topics. By the way, thanks for your past few questions, they are really interesting. markusan
If your meditation ever has any dreamlike quality, refocus because you are not meditating. In meditation you are only concerned with reality and truth. If thoughts arise that are dreamlike, scary, whatever, pay close attention to them and if they are delusion they will disappear. But you must turn your minds eye one them. When you are meditating you are always in control, alert and wide awake, though not in your normal mindstate. Experienced meditators might say that your normal conscious waking state is more like a dream than meditation is. Dreams are basically illusion, as is the idea often experienced in dreams that you can move objects with your mind, fly etc. If you have those ideas when you are meditating, look at them, recognise them for what they are, merely distractions, and let them go. Your brain does not like the quiet of meditation at first so it creates lots of wonderful things to think about, but they have no substance. Focus on the breath coming out your nostrils and going back in, that's all, when interesting thoughts arise about dreams, levitation, superpowers etc you've lost concentration so get your mind back to your breath. Practice.
Spaceman
Sleep and mediation both rely on changes in brainwave patterns and both drop in the same sort of way, but they're still worlds apart. Both can be really pleasant and relaxing, though. Once I fell asleep while meditating (heh) and woke up an hour later feeling like I'd slept all night. Apparently the deepest sort of trance you can get into aside from sleep is what people experience while chanting and beating a drum, like at pow-wows. I'm magic. It's just that if I showed my magic in public, people would die, and I don't want that kind of burden to live with.
Vito
hahaha, cerebrin has a good answer. dreams are your brain activity during night, which isnt all that special really. chemical and electrical signals running around, doing what they do... usually influenced by recent memories and crap like that... telekenisis (sp?), the mind dying and our bodies dying because of that, and all that crap that sounds good in movies... not real. hope that bursts your bubble. granmasterchen
I was just having this discussion with a good friend of mine who has his masters in psychology. It was a very intersting topic and I would tell you to do your research on both topics, because there is still alot about dreams and sleep that we don't have a scientific explanation for. If I can get ahold of him I will have him post here for you all. Or maybe just send you a PM. That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
markusan
Ronin, you ask if you meditated for eight hours whether you would have thoughts like you have when you are dreaming. I have not meditated for eight hours straight, but I have participated in 10 day sesshins where the cumulative meditation time is far more than eight hours. I find the longer I meditate the more I can continue the meditative mindstate into everyday life. But I say again it is NOT dreamlike. In a dream you are part of the dream, basically at its mercy. The meditative state, or eight meditative states or jhanas are very clear, very real, I am trying to explain what it's like but words fail me. You have to do it.
