Hello

Recommended Posts

I guess I never really looked at this section.

I am from San Diego, California USA

I am currently in a position of diving full force and submersing myself in all things martial arts atm.

The reasoning is i am highly considering starting my own school about this time next year.

I have trained in Kenpo Karate for about 12 years now, and am preparing for my second Black Belt.

I have trained in Muay Thai Kickboxing, and am a Fighter.

I train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at this point and am very happy with how it is rouunding out my game.

I have trained in Boxing, but really do not like the lack of tools i am able to use, I have had several boxing fights though.

The other main martial art I am interested in taking in the future is Aikido

I come from a school that is very successful and getting ready to celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. It has over 500 students, and has approximately 30 black belts ranging from 1st black to 6th black belt.

I started Martial Arts based on my love for fighting.

Only street fighting got too dangerous and i wanted a family and a future..

I didnt want to give up fighting so martial arts was a natural fit.

I struggle with the Forms and some of the principles and must always force myself to embrace that side of the arts.

Anything contact I crave and enjoy however.

I have a fairly extensive resume of fights, from an estimated 500 - 1000 street fights in my younger years, to 72 pit fights, I have been in somewhere around 100 point sparring karate tournaments and never placed less then third in any of those.

I have had about 18 kickboxing matches, a handful of boxing matches, and 2 no holds matches.

I plan on competing in Jiu Jitsu tournaments soon, and will continue my kickboxing, and soon alot more ho holds barred matches.

I have recently starting buying books, videos, anything i can get my hands on to expand my knowledge outside of my base. As I honestly feel that anyone starting a business must me knowledgable about all forms of martial arts.

My goal in starting my own school, is to share my knowledge, start a combat team, from point sparring to boxing, kixkboxing, grappling, and no holds barred.

I welcome any questions, and have so far enjoyed all i have learned from this site.

At age 32 I obviously have some fairly set morals and ethics and will be more then happy to debate the principles of certain ideas or theories.

A few of my biggest pet peeves..

people who are so single minded that they think what is best for them is best for everyone.

people who have to resort to foul language and personal attacks when they are losing an arguement

people who act tough on message boards without any real means of actually having a confrontation... This is a message baord on the internet... everyone is 7 foot tall, 500 pounds and invulnerable on the other end right? /chuckles

ignorance. - I have no patience for it. Once a poit has been made and someone continues to fight it out of sheer ignorance i get frustrated.

anyways, all questions are welcome, and i will answer most everything other then extremely personal questions.

*EDITTED* I forgot to mention I have been assistant instructing at my school for about 4 years now in kenpo, and have been teaching classes for about 1 year now.

Welcome! Allways good to have another Kenpoist! What is your school affiliation? I do American Kenpo. I've mostly trained under AKTS (and earlier under Mr. Speakmans organization, before they split). Recently, I've been looking at the IKCA system, and they have some good stuff.

Good points in your pet pieves- except I'm only 5'8", over 50 and slowing down a little. This (the martial arts) is what keeps th' juices flowin'. :) I enjoy contact sparing, but most of my 'street' fights were the result of stupidity or alcohol- I never went looking for them. On the other hand, I didn't allways have the good sense to avoid bad places or situations (stupidity).

Any how, good to have you aboard!

thanks guys,

Delta I train under American Kenpo as well.

My Instructor is Professor Barry Barker, He recieved his Black Belt under Jim Mitchell before Jim Mitchell broke away from Ed Parker.

Before that he had studied under Parker Linekin and Brian Adams.

He in recent years trains under Ernie George.

the school is its own Affiliation now, called american kenpo alliance or AKA

When I first started our curriculum was pretty much dead on the Ed Parker system, over the last 12 years Professor Barker has added in techniques and principles and changed some up. While our Forms and basics remain the same, alot of the techniques have been altered and have had name changes. Its funny sometimes when I remember a technique from 12 years ago and think to myself... wait a minute where did that go? Its also fun to have kenpoists from other schools come visit for a workout and see a technique and say.. wow thats awsome!

I have worked with Several Kenpo artists in the last 12 years, one thing i am definitely looking forward to is the Long Beach Internationals this month. There is an all day seminar with the likes of...

Bob White

Huk Planas

Larry Tatum

Mike Pick

Paul Dye

I think that in another 20 years I will be able to look back on that and be astounded by how lucky i was to have those peopel in one place at one time for a seminar.

Do you practice at that kenpo school near to Kragen Auto Parts in Poway? If so, i used to visit that place regularly, if just to watch and rent some of the videos. I believe i've met Mr. Barker before on a few of those occasions. Nice guy.

that is indeed the place.

not sure when the last time you were there was, but we have added another space and are currently at about 6500 square feet total.

I am not sure what happened with the videos, but they are no longer rented at our studio.

If you are looking for some great ones you should try kensington video on Adams ave, in San Diego

Do you train in San Diego?

At the moment i am at a full-stop with my training, but yes... normally i train in SD. Personal real life issues, including my significant other being diagnosed with cancer, has me with my hands full at the moment.

If/when things calm down, would be nice to meet and chat in person. I've enjoyed your insights.

Hello, I am new here, but I am lucky as well to meet people here like yourself. I am getting back into my style of Martial Arts and I think KF will help me in my current place of residence, a small town in NV, other than myself the only other people I can train with or discuss MA's is 0. Anyway, Hi, it's nice to meet you.

You must be stable and balanced in your foot work, if you have to use your martial knowledge in combat, your intent should be to win. If you do strike, you must release great power! The martial arts are easy to learn, but difficult to correct.
