Jiggy9
I'm just wondering what you guys personally think on this topic; In martial arts what are the greatest mental attributes one can have? Likewise, what are the worst? Shotokan Karate Black Belt ==Defend the path of Truth==
Karateka
The greatest mental attribute one can have is that of complete calmness. I am not talking about being relaxed, but totally calm no matter what happens. I am still working on this. I try to be calm, but somehow something inside me will always want to fight. SaiFightsMS
Interesting question Jiggy. I have wondered a lot about what should be good mental skills. As for bringing or developing a bad mental attribute in the martial arts I think one of the worst is too much confidence or ****iness. So many get so full of themselves. And it seems lilke the martial arts attracts a great deal of people who allready have this problem.
Zaknafein
I think its focus thats one of the most important mental things in the MA's. The worst, in my eyes, is being under confident. This, I have had a personal problem with, untill recently, hehe, and ill tell you, its one nasty circle. Everything that you do, you dont think, you KNOW your going to screw up. Then, guess what? Something DOES go wrong, reinforcing you belief... Also, I agree with the calmness thing (arent the MS's supposed to prevent fighting in the first place?) and the over confidence statement. Prodigy-Child
speaking of calmness.........before a fight i remain as calm as i can......i usually am quite excited before a fight but i take all that excitement and i bottle it up untill about 15-20 mins before my fight where i unleash some of it in my warm up.......then i let it all out in the ring and do what i gotta do to win You can boo me if you want, You know I'm right!-Chris Rock

One is easy. And its only reward is that it's easy.
SaiFightsMS
Persistenance, yeah that is really important. That thing inside of you that refuses to stop. That is one of the best things a martial artist can have inside themselves.

hanksohn
Gotta go with the persistence- 1) It will cause you to spend more time practicing, training, working out, sparring. And most fights are won or lost well before the event occurs. 2) Single minded focus is an incredibly powerful tool. It gives you greater physical strength and reduces the effects of pain. 3) How do you stop someone who never quits? If you punch them and they keep coming. If you knock them down and they get back up every time. (Think the Terminator) By the time you figure out that you have to escalate the level of the conflict it may be too late. That's the power of determination. Plus you gotta love all those great stories about Samurai's acceptance of death as the greatest power they possess.
