baronbvp Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 (edited) Lee had the biggest impact spreading the popularity of martial arts, though Carradine did that too but isn't as good a fighter. Lee had to slow down his moves to be caught on film. Seagal, Chan, and Van Damme are actors compared to Norris, who thankfully is a better fighter than he is an actor. Helio Gracie's family has had the biggest modern impact because all fights of any duration end up on the ground. Thank UFC and Royce Gracie for introducing the world to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, perhaps the best grappling style in existence. I'd like to learn it but at my age would probably end up too injured. kenpo_fighter Posted April 9, 2005 Posted April 9, 2005 i'm torn between 2 legends. Masutatsu Oyama, the founder of Kyokushin Karate, which i trained in for 5 years and got my first shodan rank. i did my own research of the claims made about Master Oyama about the 300 man kumite & knocking out bulls with his bare hands and chopping their horns off. These claims are legit. i saw it with my own eyes in video clips. the principles and values i learned in my 1st dojo, i still carry and practice.the next would have to be Bruce Lee. Another "real" fighter. The man was outspoken, cocky, & a bit arrogant and had the talent and knowledge to back it up. he helped breakdown barriers between oriental & western both racial, pychological and opened eyes, minds, & hearts while doing so. he was able to spread the beauty of not only his art but, all martial arts in a time of racial discrimination. Wisdom is knowledge rightly applied. To fight wisely is to rightly apply techniques.
Mr. Mike Posted April 10, 2005 Posted April 10, 2005 ok...seriously, let's have a thread dedicated entirely to Bruce Lee and the debate and conjecture about his life...argh. Why in the world did the debate of Lee vs. Parker even happen in the first place? Can we all stop arguing long enough to pay attention to the thread? I will say that hollywood can make mediocre fighters seem legendary...favorite fighter? uh, can I say myself? I like what I do...I impress myself.other than that, I like to watch Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan and Jet Li, and all the others on TV, but as for reality, I would have to give it to Mas Oyama and Ali. When a man's fortunate time comes, he meets a good friend; When a man has lost his luck, he meets a beautiful woman.-anonymous
y2_sub Posted April 10, 2005 Posted April 10, 2005 If i am to choose , i would choose Sosai Oyama .. I would say that fransisco filho is the greatest fighter alive , quiet frankly , the man is great with all what he accomplished in Kiokushin and k-1 rings , his 100 men Kumite , but as a fighter and instructor , he have done nothing comparing to Sosai Oyamawhat i admired in Oyama isn't killing bulls ( 4 in instance , 47 as a hole) or competing with any one , althow that is great ,but surviving 18 month of solitude in the mountains , thats legendary !!!!that just came up into my mind : most PPL congratulate the champion , but never his instructor !!!!!! Moon might shine upon the innocent and the guilty alike
