In summary, it is involved on what u are doing (kicks or punches, etc.) then where u are more comfortable with.. my sensei uses lots of kiai but I often hear him use kiai, he uses DAI! HAT! and more. It is also can be on what right time you should use it to make your force stronger.. :)

Think of your hands and feets as a sword, just don't apply it on foods.

The key to everything is continuity achieved by discipline.

when i started, i was 12 almost 13

we were allowed to stay an hr after class for extra training if we wanted

one time the assistant instructor spent the whole hr trying to train me to kiah louder than a whisper :P

there is this kid that i teach, he just turned three

he has the cutest kiah ever

sounds like "k-eye-ah"

when u ask him to kiah, he just yells that out, with a big scowl on his face as part of it

its funny cuz he still cant quite kiah and do a technique at the same time, too much for him i guess

so he will punch, then yell "k-eye-ah"

then punch, then yell, etc

:D

I use to scream along kiai but my sensei told me to short it. He also said to me that when you kiai you have to leave your punch out and when you finish kiai you have to go back to kumite stance. Don't know why.

the other day i was in the lobby, marking the attendance for the classes that day

the intermediate/advanced kids class was practicing kata

the girl in front, a red belt, was right on the edge of the mat, and she kiahed

even though i KNEW they were practicing kata, it still scared me half to death :D

I personally hate my Kiai. Its a deep HEER! :kaioken: , but I guess if its what comes natural then its okay. Is it actually possible to Kiai wrong?

Depending on the style slightly, but 99percent...yes, you can Kiai in a way where it would hinder your training in a certain aspect.

My kiai is more like a soft "High!" sound. My kiai(s) are really quiet, since I'm very soft-spoken, so no one really hears them except myself. It's pathetic really.

This is for point sparring in tournaments..to emphasize your strike so it's more visible but in real life it's pointless to do so. It's also pointless to do so in more full contact matches.

There are different ways of doing this, your explaination I disagree with.

I guess it depends on what art you practice.
