I've started to borrow one from a blackbelt in my school. It's a kind ai-ahh. Maybe a little corny, but anything's gotta be better than the real weak one I started out with.

whatever feels good at the time.. I havent found a kiai that really works like i want it to yet =/

There are different kiaps for different techniques or situations; and some forms even have different ones in them (heians for example). Their purpose is to express different levels of energy. I always find that each student puts his/her own bend on their kiap and you can identify them just by the sound. We use this during demonstrations as signals to team members.

Our Shinkyokushinkai dojo's kiai is "SEI!!!" It doesn't sound so powerful, but it seems to help breathing when forcefully punching or kicking.

Mine is more like a " KIYAH!" Though Sometimes I hold it out and t goes like " KIYAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" though I' usually gasping for air after that :D
