SaiFightsMS Posted December 1, 2001 Posted December 1, 2001 For anyone who does traditional forms I am looking for information of Rohai other wise known as Meikyo or Myung Kyung. I know there is a lot of diversty among these katas and Matsumura Rohai and I think the Rohai kata Itosu did with ichii, ni and san. Do you do any of these kata forms and do you know anything about their lineage or history?
SaiFightsMS Posted December 2, 2001 Author Posted December 2, 2001 A lot of research is revealing that variants of the Rohai done by Shor-in ryu groups is probably Rohai ichii of the 3 coming from Matsumura and/or Itosu. Meikyo is looking like Rohai Ni. Any other input? Anybody else do a variant? Many traditional styles do some form or variant.

SaiFightsMS Posted December 9, 2001 Author Posted December 9, 2001 Thanks Ronryu. It is looking like Rohai is the Okinawan name for these katas. Meikyo would be the name Funakoshi changed them to when he took Okinawan Karate to Japan and popularised it. He changed the names of many katas. Only some of them stuck better than other names did. Rohai shodan seems to be the rohai of the Shor-in ryu people. Meikyo as practiced by Shotokan now was originally Rohai Nidan. I have no idea about Rohai Sandan.
Karateka Posted December 9, 2001 Posted December 9, 2001 I only know Matsamura Rohai. "Never hit a man while he's down; kick him, its easier"Sensei Ron Bagley (My Sensei)
