ramymensa Posted June 4, 2004 Posted June 4, 2004 In my dojo it's not a problem. In summer is quite hot and I've already started wearing a t-shirt. My karategi is quite heavy cotton and it cost me a small fortune so I tend to take care of my top (usually it suffers more from perspiration). The only "problem" is in these occasions I just line up with those without a gi, and it's not such a problem also. I think clothing is not the most important thing in training although I love wearing my gi and belt World Shotokan Karate
renketsu Posted June 4, 2004 Author Posted June 4, 2004 Thank you all for the replies... all seemed to generally agree with the idea The problem I would have is that my club is part of a group of clubs, run by my instructor (6th Dan) and I would have to ask him before doing anything such as changing the "uniform" on a permanent basis... I could imagine some of his students training with me and running off to tell the boss Initially, the idea would be any plain white T-shirt or polo shirt and if that was a hit then next year would be embroidered only... they are likely to be under a tenner each (looking at the prices on the web - cheers for the link Aefibird ) It's the same idea as my club badge... it's a requirement that you wear the badge on your Gi once you have licenced (only £3). Oonyuudou - The thought of people practising in their underwear is generally highly unappealing (there are some exceptions of course ) Andy. Shorinryu Sensei Posted June 4, 2004 Posted June 4, 2004 My only concern would be people looking up my shorts while i'm stretching or kicking and seeing my package. that'd be embarrasing ... I'm really trying to refrain from commenting on this one smr, as all sorts of things are popping into my head right now. Anyway, my policy in my dojo has been that t-shirts can be work instead of gi tops during the hot summer months. T-shirts must be clean and in good repair, and nothing "offensive" (beer slogans, cartoons, etc) on them. The general rule of thumb is when school lets out for the summer (sometimes earlier if it gets hot sooner) then we switch to t-shirts. In the fall when school starts, gi tops go back on. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
ramymensa Posted June 4, 2004 Posted June 4, 2004 With the shorts ... well my dojo is strict in that. You can't wear shorts. Long sport pants or karategi pants. And I think it's quite OK, especially in order to avoid the kind of embaressment you've mentioned. World Shotokan Karate
Dijita Posted June 4, 2004 Posted June 4, 2004 Just a note, if you're not going to wear a gi top... a t-shirt is the next worst thing you can wear. Usually made of cotton, they don't wick away sweat and it doesn't breath very well. When I'm not wearing my gi top I wear some kind of lightweight breathable shirt that are made for runners or hikers or whatever. Then I don't sweat so much.
Mart Posted June 4, 2004 Posted June 4, 2004 But Dijita why would you bother.............i thought girls didnt sweat Seize the day!
SaiFightsMS Posted June 4, 2004 Posted June 4, 2004 During summer plain white or club t-shirts permitted.
Ti Posted June 8, 2004 Posted June 8, 2004 In our Dojo, Perish the thought of no Gi. In all honesty though, the pants get in the way. My knees get caught when do some kicks. MT has the right idea with shorts.
