cymry
Same questions, same arguments (yawns). To say "90% of fights end up on the ground" is tiring and unnecesary. If someone said 20% of fights ended up on the ground, you'd think it's important to learn groundfighting wouldn't you? Same if someone said 20% of assaults involve a knife. It is important that you know how to fight on the ground. To those who say "my superior striking skills ensure I won't go down to the ground", you are in denial. Maybe people can't take you down, but you may be standing on ice or a slippery surface, or there are objects on the floor. It is a lot easier to lose your balance than you think. You need to know how to fall, how to get back up on your feet, and how to position yourself on the ground. You don't need to learn complicated holds and submissions, nor their counters. Strweet thugs don't attack you this way. That being said, you still want to avoid the ground if at all possible. You're in a dangerous place if your attacker has his buddies with him. Mart
I posed the question because its soemthing i have heard alot. If its boring dont answer. You dont even have to read it. I dont think i cant be taken to the ground, the chances of an unskilled attacker taking me to the ground are limited, but i should still know what to do because you never know. Seize the day! cymry
Also, 100% of fights do not start standing up. You could be lying in bed an a burglar attacks you, or you could be sitting in your car when a carjacker puts a knife to your throat. But of course, this isn't fighting, this is combat. Fighting is when two people square off and go toe-to-toe.
Mart
not many burglars attack people when they are sleeping, whats the point? they want to steel stuff unoticed. It could happen but its unlikely. Besides if someone attacks me in my sleep they probably want to kill me, i would lose because they could just cut my throat. Seize the day! cymry
It happens a lot actually. They'll wake you up then sit you in a room at knifepoint/gunpoint, and demand that you give them any valuables that are locked away.
Mart
well i guess it depends what sort of place you live in cos i dont have anything worth very much and i certainly have no where to lock anything away. Besides if thats all they want they can have it. Im not going to fight for material things. Seize the day!
1st KYU
it doesnt matter if 90% of fights end up on the ground or not. it is a made up statistic. as was said most people feel uncomfortable on the ground, teachers use this stat as a tool. to tell somone ground fighting is VERY IMPORTANT. i myself am weak in this area, and know i must improve, because if get on the ground im donefore. this is why this stat is around. SevenStar
there are some stats out there - some that were published by the police force. It stated that something like 70% of all police altercations ended up on the ground.
TheDevilAside
Wouldn't that be because the police are trying to get them on the ground to gain complete control of them, incase they resist arrest? ..Atleast that's what they do on the TV show Cops :/ "If you're going through hell, keep going." - Sir Winston Churchill
sansoouser
The reason they go to the clinch or to the ground is when people get tired and they can't punch anymore so they grab the other person to get a rest and try to take them down. The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.
