Hello,

My advice is to take both. It is a lot of fun to take both, I do it. It does not mess up anything in either art. If by "karate" you mean shotokan karate, Jiu-Jitsu plays a big role in it. Basically I found over my eleven years of experience, they both play a vital role with each other. They go hand in hand, but if you just want one art, try karate first. It will focus your quicker, more discipline, and it will overall benefit you more.

shodan - Shotokan

Blue Belt - Jiu-Jitsu

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care the themself without that law is both. For wounded man shall say to his assailant, if I live I will kill you, If I die you are forgiven-- such is the rule of Honor.
