my taekwondo gym also teaches muay thai, but rumors say that the class isnt that great. also when i went into the office i never seen any muay thai metals or trophys, all of them were taekwondo. but im going to watch the class tommorow so im not too sure yet.

but yeah is there a website or something that will tell me all the gyms close by me or something, i want to look for a good gym that is also close.

oh and my parents think boxing is dangerous and dont want me to take it, or make me finish taekwondo first. you guys got any ideas? ive tried negotiating, giving points, etc etc but all they say is "its too damn dangerous boy! your going to get hit so many times in the head that ur gonna turn stupid!" blah blah.

Any fighter can fight their best when fresh, it matters when your not.

Ok, a MT gym wont show its trophies or belts. Its not done. They may have some photos but only maybe.

The trophioes belong to the fighters, not the gym.

The fighters belong to the gym.

Unlikely to be a website. MT is more word of mouth where clubs are. There arent really any organizations or anything. Only for giving the belts out.

Regarding your parents. Yes you will get hit in the head. But nothing like as much as in standard boxing. The whole body is a target.

Ive been doing MT 6 years and im doing my Cisco IT qualifications at the moment. Im an IT consultant and its hard work sometimes. If my brain was gone i would not be able to do it.

Fighting in the ring can affect your barin but it is a known fact that this does not affect Thai Boxers for the above reasons.

Besides you can wear a head gaurd if you want.

No one will laugh at you because you will sure as hell feel the pain in your body.

I would do MT no matter what.

What you tell your parents is up to you. But knowledge dispells fear.

Meet this instructor and tell him what your parents say.

A good MT instrctor will NOT laugh at you but try and help you.

hmm, you'll probably lose the use of your legs before you turn stupid in kick-boxing or muay thai....

post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are.

You should really try it.

As for trophies, I never give them to the club. I've earned them, they're mine. I give my club money for my training, the other stuff is mine.

Anyway, our club doesn't go for showing trophies. Nowadays you can buy them at ever street corner :D

Oops, I guess Mart got a really bad kick in the head recently.

I have a barin, you have a brain, a barin is like a brain but ten times faster. and much more attractive to women.:)

tell your parents that less injuries occur in boxing than in other sports such as football, basketball (youd be amazed at the ankle injuries from jumping and landing)- yes youll get hit and all that, but the gear you wear and the nature of the sport is less dangerous than it would appear to people like your folks.

A lot of tkd places are starting to offer "Muay Thai" classes, I would be very wary of a school that mainly teaches tkd teaching muay thai as a secondary art if you are serious abut learning Muay Thai. Chances are the instructors have only a cursory understanding of MT. Or perhaps they have hired a MT fighter as a trainer for that course. That being the case, do your homework on the guy. Find out if he really knows what he's talking about. If he claims titles, you should be able to find out if he really holds them or not via the internet. A lot of schools are jumping on the MT bandwagon as it gains popularity with the MA community.

As for the getting hit in the head and getting stupid, well, a reputable gym will not have you sparring hard enough to get hurt. MT sparring should be light and pad work should be the only time you strike 100%. Anyone telling you to spar like your fighting is trying to get you hurt and you should not do it. All out full contact MT is for the ring or for defending yourself, not for learning. After all, a ski instructor won't send you down the steepest hill right off the bat cause you'll get hurt. A muay thai instructor should be no different. If you can make your parents understand that, you should have no problem getting their blessing.
