I'm hoping that is the correct term. I'm a new Iaido student, and that aspect hasn't been covered more than in passing. What I refer to, as you can surely guess even if the term is wrong, is the securing of your iai in it's sheath so that if someone gets ahold of it that should not, they can't just pull it out straight away, such as kids or really just anyone who would not be drawing your weapon (ie anyone who you've not given specific permission to =p)

Anyhoo, as I said I'm new to Iaido. Been studying Yoseikan Aikido for about three years now, and loving it. Recently my Sensei began offering an extra class that is solely Iaido that I have taken part in. I was curious if there is a site perhaps (I have been unable as of yet to find one) that details a way of tying down of the weapon. Right now I do an improvised and quite ugly version. I've seen some very pretty ties and I wanted to learn a good tie that would not only be functional but look nice as well.

If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Below is a link to an image of what I refer to from a post I made on this topic on another forum that didn't really get answered. As you can see, the tie is rather sloppy and ugly looking and while it functions, I'm a big fan of the beautiful ties you can see in various forms in the martial arts. I figured there had to be some good ones for this type of use.

I have heard of peace knots before, but more in Western sword arts. It's a lot like the zip ties used to secure firearms at gun shows...

The idea isn't so much to keep people from messing with your sword, but rather to keep you from drawing your own sword in a rash decision. Unless of course, you carry a sharp knife for severing said peace knot ;)

I imagine just about any decorative knot can be used. I wouldn't slap it onto your practice sword since undoing it is probably almost as much a pain as tying it. Sensei will probably grow weary of that one..

Now... a faux peace knot, that would be interesting. Imagine a knot that looks extremely elaborate, yet if pulled in the right place falls apart... THAT would be VERY cool. I've got some books lying around on the topic of decorative knots (a good google term, by the way) and I'll see what I can find.

I'm no longer posting here. Adios.

Most of the teachers and students in my kenjutsu dojo wrap the sageo around the tsuka and the saya and then knot the sageo at the kurigata. But that's the way our ryuha does it.

Each ryuha has a different way of doing things. Ask your instructor.
