KSD Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 Shotokan's Sochin is a nice looking kata, but I like the Shi-to Ryu Sochin better.
Killer Miller Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 Although I did my share of Sochin, I never really cared for the kata that much. It seemed that all the kata tournaments was to see who did the best Sochin - everone was doing Sochin as their primary kata. That's why I made Gankaku as my primary kata - plus I really liked that kata. - Killer - Mizu No KokoroShodan - Nishiyama SenseiTable Tennis: http://www.jmblades.com/Auto Weblog: http://appliedauto.mypunbb.com/Auto Forum: http://appauto.wordpress.com/
kotegashiNeo Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 K have heard of fudo dachi before never heard of sochin dachi hey but that is why I am here to learn Kisshu fushin oni te hotoke kokoro
G95champ Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 Same stance. The Fudo is nicknamed Sochin ONLY because that stance is done in the kata Sochin. The stance name is NOT Sochin but it is often refered to as so because thats one of the few times we do practice it. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
Gyte Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 (edited) A funny thing is that in Kyokushinkai a stance exists called fudo dachi, but it's not the same stance as the fudo dachi in Shotokan. The Kyokushinkai fudo dachi is the same stance as the hachi dachi in Shotokan. This can sometimes be pretty confusing when you cross train in both styles. aefibird Posted May 13, 2004 Author Posted May 13, 2004 Sheesh, I have enought trouble keeping up with which stance name means which stance just in one style! renketsu Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 I always found it funny that we teach beginners to do a "proper" front stance with a straight back leg and front knee bent to the right degree and then later on teach them to do sochin - which is how they did the front stance to start with! aefibird Posted May 13, 2004 Author Posted May 13, 2004 lol, yeah it is a bit of a karate oddity that one. It's like telling them they're wrong then changing it and telling them that, yes, you were right after all... "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." G95champ Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 Learn to do it the hard way first so when you do it the simpler way you are much more effective. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
