gcav Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 I study combative MA. We train in all areas concerned with the MA, not just the physical techniques of kicking and puching. Train like your life depends on it....Because it does.
47MartialMan Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 Yes to all, and then some,...for the initial post......

delta1 Posted September 9, 2004 Author Posted September 9, 2004 Uh......dont we all ?......"Martial"...."war".....no ???? From the original post, and the title bar for this section: "Combative Martial Arts It's not just about fun and fitness, you are also learning to fight. Learn how to be better aware of your surroundings, combat skills, and how to handle life and death situations. Includes JKD!" Not all martial artists, schools, or even systems, do these things. Some go so far as to say that you should never fight. Others concentrate only on sport or self improvement. That's fine, and they are no less valid than the combative arts simply because of a different focus or philosophy. But a lot of these do have some practical skills training (with the exception of the 'never-nevers'). I was just interested in others views and philosophies when I started this post. Freedom isn't free!
47MartialMan Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 Here is a sort of on/off topic wuestion: Why did Shaolin monks practice combative arts? Giving the discipline, study, and criteria for Chen Buddhism?
Master Jules Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 I think it was because they found that the practice of martial arts also facilitated a healthier mind, body, and spirit.....what are your thoughts on that MM ? ~Master Jules......aka "The Sandman""I may be a trained killer......but Im really a nice guy"
47MartialMan Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 Healthier body.....yes Healthier mind.....how? Spirit..................they were Buddhist, did they need martial arts/combat for spirit? To understand Shaolin, is to understand Chen Buddhism. Fortunately, one of my students is a Collegiate Professor. He teaches "Eastern Philosophy and Regions" His specialty, and a separate course, is Buddhism. He can read and write sanskirt. He has given me Buddhist (monks and practitioners) contacts to correspond with. These discussions, I have recorded/transcript. I have learned much from all of them. Ex: Was there such a person-Bodhidarma? What is the true description and teachings of Bodhidarma? What are some of their rituals? Why do they shave their heads? What are the "dots" on the heads? Why are the robes orange/red? What are Mandelas? Being people of peace, why would they be interested in fighting/combat? Did they call this Kung Fu? Many more..... Older Buddhists had answers and I found two, in particular, to have actually read and studied old/surviving sutras.
dear john Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 i am definately in a commbative martial art. dan zen ryu zenyo bujutsu nearly everything in this MA is made to handi cap someone with little effort. the funny thing is that i know im wrong and i know your right, yet you keep argueing like it will change my mind. you should really know, you dont have to be right to win:)
Little Dragon Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Ocassionally me and my buddy meet up on saturdays at his house and we have a full contact sparring.Since we feel tkd sparring is just a sport kind and wouldnt really help in a real fighting situation,on saturdays we go to his big basement and wear all gear but chest gaurd and we allow blows to the head with fists. We also allow achother to do grapple moves to eachother..basically were fighting..but with a few gear...and were still friends...ok ill shut up now.. ''I know what your thinking.........did I shoot you 3 times? or did I shoot you 472 times?''
Master Jules Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Good job....just keep it controlled and focus on improving your techniques.....the tougher you make your training, the easier every day things will be ! ~Master Jules......aka "The Sandman""I may be a trained killer......but Im really a nice guy"
