drunkenninja Posted May 4, 2004 Posted May 4, 2004 I dont know exactly how the ufc or other mma ring fighting works as far as enrolling, But i was wondering if I had a shot at competing there? Im 6'0" about 240, some of that is gut, but im working on that. but im not fat. Going through training in isshinryu. I realize id have to get some floor training like jujitsu. Just wondering if there was any chance on me competing there, and what would i have to do to get there? Thanks
White Warlock Posted May 4, 2004 Posted May 4, 2004 How much experience have you had? Would be helpful if you gave us a clue as to what your qualifications are. "When you are able to take the keys from my hand, you will be ready to drive." - Shaolin DMV TestIntro
drunkenninja Posted May 4, 2004 Author Posted May 4, 2004 thats exactly the point of my question. How do i get that experience, exactly? I am not agressive or in anyway violent, I just love the sport. I never got into the common sports, like football, basketball, hockey, etc, like normal guys. I just like MA and fighting. I dont think its a good idea to go around starting fights in the streets, that would be just stupid! How do i go about finding rings to get into? and are they hard to get into? thanks
White Warlock Posted May 4, 2004 Posted May 4, 2004 You might want to check with your sensei first. If he doesn't approve of your goals and doesn't provide options for you, you'll have to decide whether you wish to continue being his student. Not all, but many teachers feel a sense of betrayal when you go 'outside' of the school to obtain your agenda. Even moreso if they could have helped you with it themselves. Just a courtesy rule of thumb. If your sensei presents himself as openminded, or willing to assist you in your endeavors, your halfway there. My recommend is to start there and ask more questions here if, after doing such, you don't get the answers, guidance, or response you had expected or hoped for. TheDevilAside Posted May 4, 2004 Posted May 4, 2004 Ever seen the movie Fight Club? If you thought those fight scenes looked like fun, then sign up! Haha "If you're going through hell, keep going." - Sir Winston Churchill
AndrewGreen Posted May 4, 2004 Posted May 4, 2004 Find a MMA gym and sign up... Training in Isshin ryu is not going to prepare you for MMA. I did Isshin ryu for 13-14 years, I now do MMA. They are very different things. Andrew Greenhttp://innovativema.ca - All the top martial arts news!
drunkenninja Posted May 5, 2004 Author Posted May 5, 2004 I just watched the k1 think on espn2, those guys are good. id give my whole 401k funds to get in the ring with some of those guys. cung li is bad *. i know id lose but atleast id have fun. Am i normal?
Red J Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 You need to look for some small regional-type events. That would be a place to start. Try doing an internet search with your state and mma or other key terms. You could also go to a major association website and email them the same question. They may have the scoop on the "B" leagues as I am sure they scout talent. I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.
Northren Ogre Posted May 5, 2004 Posted May 5, 2004 Have you ever been in a fight in your life? In or out of a ring? Have you ever competed anywhere?...from your post it sounds like your a total beginner and I would have to say your chances are slim to none. http://prkickboxing.tripod.com
drunkenninja Posted May 6, 2004 Author Posted May 6, 2004 As far as ring experience goes, i have none. I was just asking a general question about how people get to compete in tournaments like that. Northern Oger is probably 100% right, but are you talking about about me losing or even qualifying? And whitewarlock, is right i will definatley ask sensei. And I will respect his decision. Red J has good point i would be satisfied to compete in local events. The whole thing about me asking is, I just have alot of energy and i really think i would enjoy the sport of ring fighting. I have no family so noone would be disappointed if I got my ribs broke or lost an eye. I do enjoy martial arts. So to me it seems like a good idea. I train in Isshinryu, have did some taekwondo. But i realize that training alone wont be enough to successfully compete. Id like to try though.
